Which players used tailored or long bladed bats?
« on: December 20, 2017, 11:27:05 AM »

Some famous one's I know. Boycott used a 2lb 5oz though with an inch shorter blade depending upon the feel.

Len Hutton a Harrow. Bradman's bat was 2lb 2oz apparently.

How many players have used longer bladed bats though? Klusener's was max length though not aware of any others.

Was watching old clips of Sunil Gavaskar and I wonder whether his was a longer blade, which would be unusual for a short fella.

Boycott used a stick of Rhubarb, 2lb 5 or otherwise. Says so everytime an english batter plays a poor shot.

Whether or not he actually used one or not, i'm not sure but certainly Slazenger marketed the Mark Waugh V100 'waugh zone' bat as long blade, short handle

2lb 6oz. Never more than six grains. Did not like oil. Recently told here that he said he liked butterfly on TMS, but I've never seen visible evidence in pictures or museums (Lord's and Headingley).

Ed Smith talked of switching to long handles in his book. Later on his career he was with Kookaburra, so may have tried a long blade instead?

In a book on Ian botham by Dudley Doust, bats are discussed. At the time the book was written, in 1979, both Ian Botham and Sunil Gavaskar used DF bats so there was a connection, and at one point durung the 79 season, Sunil Gavaskar was trying teammates' bats in the dressing room, and found a longer blade made him stand more upright, so got DF to make him a longer blade bat.

It would be interesting if the player with the peerless record against the best fast bowling attack of all time used a longer blade despite being vertically challenged... 13 centuries against the Windies..

Think I read somewhere that he preferred Kashmiri willow too. Anyone know anything else about his bats? Weight, middle position etc?

Also Aravinda. Did he use something a bit different?
