First 'Proper' Bat
« on: January 01, 2018, 12:55:12 AM »

Hi everyone!

Bare with me on this one as i have no idea if it'll make any sense!

As i'll be entering my third season of cricket this year, i think it's finally time i invested in a proper piece of willow! The £50 kookaburra i picked up in my first season has served me reasonably well, but i'd like to get myself a non-plank as i'll be moving up the order this year, and we all know that a new bat is the only way to increase your batting average!

I'll pre-face this by saying that i'm not exactly au fait with all the technical terms when it comes to designing a bat so forgive me!

I've been using my mates bat at winter nets this year, as out of all our team, his bat felt the most perfect for me! It's a Tour De Force made by Woodstock. It has a mid-low middle and weighs about 2'7/8-ish. However, the thing that makes it feel decent to me is the handle. My kook is a round handle that always felt a bit bulky in my hands (i have very small hands) whereas my mates is a oval handle which always felt a bit smaller in my hands ( i have no idea if this is a common theme with oval vs round, or whether it's just this bat?)

(It's this bat, if anyone was interested in what i'm on about; http://www.itsjustcricket.co.uk/cricket-bats-c17/senior-cricket-bats-c18/woodstock-tour-de-force-platinum-cricket-bat-p813)

So realistically i'll be looking for a bat around 2'8, with a mid-low middle and an oval handle.

I'm undecided on where to go for it! I'm only 5/10 mins down the road from hunts county, however i'm unsure what the deal is with customs from there since Tony retired. The other option would of course be to go to B3. I've got roughly £200-ish for it. Again, i have no idea what the pricing is like on a bat like this!

Apologies if this sounds like a slightly uncoordinated stream of random information, but i thought i'd start the ball rolling with this post as i'll be looking to get it at some point in January, preferably before i go back to uni!

Mate, Hunts would sort you out for sure, just have a chat with Steve. Other local options would be Rob Pack in Irthlingborough or Garrard & Flack in Mildenhall. All great batmakers with an eye for detail.

Good luck!

Any one of our list of sponsors would be more than happy to help you out I’d imagine. Just reach out to them

If you like your mates bat, any not get a Woodstock Tour De Force yourself.

I think the Silver or Gold grade come in under or around your budget and you can order it in your desired weight.

There's a phone number on their site, you could give John a call and make sure you get exactly what you're after :)

Yeah mate, drop John at Woodstock a call. He would definitely sort you out!

Lovely bloke! His workshop is his shed next to where he keeps his chickens, it’s brilliant!

Good bats too.

I'd agree on the getting one like your mates
Always nice to have a hit with a bat, and if it suits you and your game even better
Could you make your mate an offer for his bat?

If you’re based where I think you are you’ve got @Red Ink Cricket just down the bypass ask your mate to borrow his bat and John will be able to make it up for you.

Alternatively, Hunts would do the job and have a good selection to pick from or get custom made

Personally I think you are limiting yourself by just wanting one bat...

If possible  take your mates bat and go to a local batmaker where you can pick up try a few bats get the feel feel for the handles and importantly get the pick up feel right in your presence.
