Australian Leagues - Help needed!
« on: January 02, 2018, 10:41:53 PM »

Looking for some help from the Australian members, or any other members who have played cricket in Australia.

We have 3 guys we are looking at as overseas amateur for our club this season.  The difficulty is trying to work out the standard/level of the particular leagues/grades their teams play in, and how they compare??

We have 1 lad who plays 1st grade for Riverstone Rangers in NSW.

1 lad who plays 2nd/3rd grade for Melville CC in WA.

1 lad who plays 1st/2nd grade for Elsternwick CC in Victoria.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Andy.

Elsternwick from what I know is Victorian Sub District, I know a few guys who play over there and some aussies who've been over here from there and it's a decent standard, sub fielded for a game myself and was impressed

I know that Melville's 1st grade side sometimes features Adam Voges and their skipper is an Aussie that played for Middlesex for a while, hopefully, this helps a little bit as he won't be as good as these guys but not far off

Melville is a perth grade club . The others are not grade club , so are , generally speaking , lower standards .
If they play district grade in a capital city then you are getting somewhere .

All the capitals cities in each state has what is called premier cricket ( used to be called grade and still most refer to it as grade) most comps will have up to 6 grades, 1st  the strongest and generally speaking most clubs would have 2-3 players within that team with state/BBL contracts.
Melville is the only one you mention which is a premier (grade club), the rest been subbies/country comps.
Not say there is no good players playing in subbies/county comps, often it the case they just don't live in the city or don't want to commit to the training, as most premier club require.
Generally the top players in subbies would get a game in 5/6 in Premier.

It is difficult to compare levels between the UK and AUS but once again in general if the player plays 2/3 for Melville I would suggest he would hold his own in 1st in the Yorkshire Premier League
hope that helps

Thanks for all your help so far guys.

Perhaps the lad from Melville is the one to look at in more detail then?

Any more input from the Aussie members will be greatly appreciated.

That is very true!

My 2penneth...

Many moons ago i went to Oz for 2 seasons and sampled both Grade and Shires/District cricket in Sydney - just like @well past my peak said 5/6 grade is generally the level of 1st team Shires.

I played exactly that 5th grade and then 1st team in my 2nd season over there.

What i would say though is i would pay particular attention to the age and background of the player. There were numerous very good old school grade cricketers playing shires who were just now too old to play high up and train 2/3 times a week etc.... also the other way round where there were excellent youngsters who started at their local Shires club and just hadn't made the jump (or didn't want to) to grade cricket.

Thanks @six and out .

Understand exactly what you’re saying and this is why it’s so hard to compare players, even when you can look at stats/averages etc!

This will be our clubs first time of getting an overseas, so it is and will continue to be a big learning curve for us!

Out of interest where do you play? What's the standard like?

And what's the name of the lad from Riverstone? Think I may also have his CV as he was one given to us by our local agent

Some excellent information on this thread - thanks all. My club is also looking for an overseas amateur for the 2018 season for the first time. We've been in contact with CricX who have given us a shortlist of suitable players within our budget. We've looked at them in depth but have been unable to really find someone that we believe will suit our club.

We've heard mixed reviews about CricX but without any links with other agents and limited links to Australia, it was our only real port of call. If anybody has any insight / recommendations regarding the process of finding and acquiring an overseas amateur, that would be greatly appreciated.

With regards to standard of cricket, I have family who play in Melbourne and have said more or less what 'well past my peak' mentioned earlier regarding the VPL and VSDCA (Victorian Sub District Cricket Association). For instance, most of 4th grade cricket in the VPL system I'm told mainly consists of youngsters and a few experienced campaigners guiding them. Speaking to their club mates, they seemed to estimate that playing 1st XI in the VSDCA 'North/West' or 'South/East' competition would be similar to 3rd grade cricket in the VPL tree and it is players from that level/standard that we've been recommended to look at.
