Professional Cricket Bat Review
« on: January 21, 2018, 11:14:34 PM »

Couple of months back came across a really good cricket bat review from alloutcricket. It reviewed available 2017 bats. Found it a really good read and wondering if anyone has come across any reviews of 2018 bats?

I think the bats have only just been sent in for their 2018 gear test, so I expect the results will be published in the next month or two

Also worth noting these things are pretty non-scientific. Companies send in a G1+ with a G2 sticker etc, so the bats look much better value for money then they are. Also sending in bats which aren't available to the paying customer (pro-level clefts etc). Making comments like "it needs knocking in more" isn't that helpful either. The testing isn't done by people with CBF levels of knowledge, and different weights are compared to each other etc. Not the best certainly! I'd argue a CBF good gear review would be far more thorough and detailed ;)

I always thought CBF should do annual awards just before the season.
'Best Boutique Brand Range'
'Best Big Brand Range'
'Overall Winner'
'Best Bats'
'Best Softs'
'Best Wheelie'
'Best Duffle' and so on.
We've got the knowledge base.

the review I read felt pretty independant/non biased.

all the bats were unbranded (no stickers what so ever)

they had to NB bats within the top 8 which I thought was very impressive!

The Good Gear Guide, which is now run by The Cricketer magazine, will be released on 26th February.

This, couldn't agree with your more Chris. Personally I don't really see the benefit in these gear tests. The Cricketer one especially as they usually ask for upwards of £250 just to enter a bat into the test (hence why so few smaller brands actually take part). If I pumped £250 of my advertising budget into Facebook/Twitter/Instagram the exposure I'd receive in return wouldn't even be comparable. A few one-off tweets or an additional 1000 followers for life? Easy decision. At least the AOC/Wisden test is free so I can understand the appeal.

A CBF gear test would be an intriguing one though! We're the ultimate collection of kit badgers after all ha. That said even a blank test wouldn't work, we'd all know the batmakers from the shoulders! ;) :D

All out cricket has merged with the recently re-released Wisden monthly magazine.

Not sure whether they will still do the blind bat test. Would be good if they did.

I'd be very surprised if they don't @Buzz, must be one of their biggest income generators each year. I'll drop them an email and see what the craic is - at least with AOC/Wisden you're not made to pay to enter (and in fairness it's about as unbiased as a cricket test possibly could be!).

Can you imagine

"Clearly a Hunts from the shoulders"
"This is a TK handle, mark it up"
"Knock a couple of marks off for the finishing on this M&H"

Yes GGG will be out shortly and has a few boutique brands featured alongside bigger names. They have put some images out on their Twitter account.

Not sure a CBF gear guide would work. One brand would win everything if they happened to be that months favourite  ;)

i have 5 bats to review and the forecast for this long weekend in Adelaide is 40,42 and 42. So if i gather the courage to venture to my 55 degree shed  I may complete the first Blind Drunk bat test.  :D
