$150 AUD Tom McVicar Special
« on: January 25, 2018, 03:01:46 AM »

Tom recently advertised these $150AUD bats on facebook...i figured what the hell ill grab one and see what the go is...

they were being sold specifically for an amateur Australia Day weekend "goldfield ashes" cricket tournament held in northern queensland which has been a tourism drawcard for the region for a couple of years now...

i had a few brief conversations with Tom over facebook...he was man of few words describing the bats but he did say:

- grade 3 willow / most having heartwood stains
- 35-40mm edges
- ping well
- round handle

given i had just rushed knocking in another bat to use in a game/training while i had issues with 2 other bats (one in for repair and one returned to the seller) i wasnt too keen on having to prep another one and paid tom the extra to prep it for me (oiled/knock)...

absolutely stoked with it...pickup and feel is amazing and pings from just above the toe to just below the stickers...ill give it another hour or 2 on the bat mallet to make sure its all good to go, but i think a $150 rubbish bat i purchased for net use is about to take over as match and overall preferred bat

That, to me, looks significantly better in all aspects than the Hitman that was posted on here recently. And for a 3rd of the price!

Cracking buy! @delazy does he only sell via Facebook?

More like less than a fifth of the price...

Looks a cracker, don't think I've seen this brand before. They make their own bats, or do they outsource?

he makes his own and has done for sometime based in australia...i believe he might have previously worked for one of the larger manufacturers based in australia

id heard plenty about his higher end stuff...including the review sarg did on a couple...but im actually amazed what he has managed to turn out and offer for $150 AUD

it also came with a solid bat bag, 2 scuffs and a bat care guide...others have suggested they also recieved 2 grips but in my case i didnt...

someone mentioned these $150 bats might be sourced from india, reshaped/repressed by him and offered cheap as a promotional product for the goldfield ashes as i mentioned earlier but it certainly doesnt take away from the final product...

genuinely feel ive ripped the bloke off with what ive received...have absolutely every intention to speak to him over our winter and get something custom made up for next season

You are right, I hadn't converted from pounds. Unbelievable buy in comparison!

first actual net with this bat tonight...wow...left me with a smile on my face! balance is perfect and hitting zone is massive...balls just fly off the bat...a mistimed defensive prod turned into a bullet back at the bowler :/ absolute certainty ill hit up tom for a nulla nulla or custom bat ready for next australian season!

yep, Tom McVicar is a good bat maker and knows how to balance and press a bat. These were actually indian premades this time for a T20 tournament of the same name. His regular bats are made from scratch. Sticker designs are not everyones taste, but he add heaps of extras to the bat purchase.

Just bumping this up again...noticed photo links are dead so will sort them tonight...

This week I committed to another bat with Tom for the upcoming season...

yesterday I received some photos of it early during the shape roughing stage so will also share them tonight.

basic direction I gave him was 2.9lb / fullish shape / duckbill like and left the rest to his ability.

with some luck Sarg will be reviewing/knocking it in the coming weeks once complete :)

Finished photos! Should be on the way to Sarg to be knocked in the coming days before I get my hands on it. will be interesting to what Tom can do with a decent cleft compared to the cheap premade I bought last year .

Looks a lovely stick, not a fan of those stickers though.

They won't catch us this time! Not this time! They haven't spotted us! No, they're all snoring in their bunks! Or, you know what? They're drinking at the bar, celebrating our sinking! Not yet, my friends. Not yet!
