Who were the best 'Part time' England bowlers you saw?
« on: January 30, 2018, 01:24:01 PM »

By that I mean guys picked in the test side as batters, but who were occasionally asked to turn their arms over and were more than useful, and may have even picked up a few wickets - I use Root as my current benchmark here:

Boycott
Gooch
Butcher
Trott
Wood (Barry?)
Hick
Maddy

I'm sure Butch picked up 3 or 4 wickets once against Aus, and am I right in thinking Ramps wasn't the filthiest offie ever?

I also remember Fat Gatt used to regularly have a trundle for Middx in the one day stuff.

I thought Michael Vaughan had a decent technique. Decent First Class average, but his test average is shocking.

Athers was allegedly a half decent leggie in his younger days.  However I remember him bowling some absolute filth at India in 1990, though still got Dilip Vengsarkar out with a full bunger.  Cricinfo reminds me of his figures that day, 7-0-60-1, wouldn't look out of place in an ODI today.

We're all over-complicating this. I challenge you to find a better test match bowler;

Mat   Inns   Balls   Runs   Wkts   BBI   BBM   Ave   Econ    SR
152   2        18        7        1     1/6   1/6    7.00    2.33  18.0

Actually, I think a credible analysis is:

Mat Inns Balls Runs Wkts BBI BBM Ave Econ SR 4w 5w 10
Tests   4  2  102  56  4  3/16  3/16  14.00  3.29  25.5  0  0  0
ODIs   14  7  228  175  4  1/13  1/13  43.75  4.60  57.0  0  0  0

@seniormoment - I would suggest both of those might have been considered all-rounders rather than part timers?

Yeah, that Jimmy Anderson was a decent part timer.

I mean he only bowled part of the time, sometimes he was fielding, or watching, or sleeping.
