Mid season oiling?
« on: February 01, 2018, 01:36:00 AM »

Does anyone oil their bats mid season? Or just wait till the start of a season and do it then?

I want to take care of my new bat and unsure if I should be oiling mid season or just once a year is fine....

I do believe if your based in Aus and it's been really hot a light oil mid season isn't a bad thing, not much of an issue for us over here as we get 2 months of warm weather if lucky

Agree with Soulman, as you're in Aus where it's a lot hotter than over here in the UK - the bat is more likely to lose the moisture within the bat and therefore become brittle and prone to breaking. By applying oil, you create a seal around the bat that stops the moisture from escaping, but this will eventually evaporate - so you need to re-apply a light coating of oil.

You can normally feel if a bat needs an oil by if it feels dry and I seem to remember your bat having a scuff sheet on it right? So if it needs an oil, just give it a light coating everywhere the willow is exposed (not covered by stickers/scuff sheet/toe guard) - but not on the splice or too close to the join of the bat and splice.

If the bat is dry oil it.

Oiling a bat will not add moisture to a dry bat.

Correct it will seal the exsisting moisture in and stop moisture getting in
