A Slight Grumble
« on: February 02, 2018, 09:48:18 PM »

Evening all,

A grumble from my part tonight. I had recently taken the stickers off one of my Kippax bats, and I had found a crack just below the splice. Having not used this bat much due to having a plethora of others, I was quite surprised by this and wondered if it had anything to do with the knot that was next to it. There seemed to be a crack on the back and there was one starting on the front too from the knot (see pictures below). Anyway, I emailed Chris with my concerns and he asked me to send the bat in. I was unsure how something like this could be fixed and wondered whether eventually it would just split straight through the bat, but I trusted that it would be done professionally.

Radio silence insude, with me having to send a number of emails over a few days before a response came, but I can appreciate to a degree the business of a company that makes their own bats from source to end. After a number of days, I finally got an email saying that it was all sorted and that it would be sent back.

I received the bat a few days after the last communication with Kippax. It arrived in a box that had zero bubble wrap and protection, with just a piece of cardboard wrapping to keep it in place.

I could not see the fix as it was covered with the new stickers. But what I could see, on the toe, was a rather lengthy crack that had appeared. Now I am highly confident that I would have noticed a crack such as this on a bat before I’d sent it away, therefore I was baffled about what had happened for it to be in this condition. I therefore decided to email Chris again in my disgruntlement querying how this had happened. There was also an imbedded dent on the back of the outside edge further up the blade (also pictured) which had not been there previously. Unfortunately, I sent that email on Saturday last week and have heard nothing since.

This upset me, as I have heard nothing but good things about Kippax and with their growth in popularity over the winter due to the ashes et al, I was hoping this would be resolved quickly and efficiently.

I believe this is an acceptable grumble as I have ensured I have given them ample time to respond to my concerns.

Please see pictures below of the original crack at the bottom of the splice:

And here are the pictures of the dent on the edge and crack on the toe:

I'm sure James will reply - he runs the account in here. In worst case give them a call and if you need anyone to take it in etc give me a shout

Well...where to start. If it was my bat I wouldn't be happy.

As a coincidence I had two bats go like this last year, when the lines on the bat go across the wood this(I have been told) is either:

Finishing being a bit rough on the sander or
Storm damage.

This is what I look for now buying a bat-the lines going across the willow.

Both bats split at the back Exactly where your crack is. .

One thing I have never seen myself is the splice being fitted into a knot, which I presume that is

I wonder how many of us have had that with the splice and never noticed because it was covered with a sticker.

A return for me on this one, hope you get sorted. Anyone can get it wrong, I think a replacement is very fair

And then there's the toe crack which can only get worse.

Regarding the original crack at the bottom of the splice - I had a bat go like this and was told it was likely due to a marginally too big splice being forced into the V. I can't imagine that knot being where it is has helped matters

Would expect some sort of response after a week to be honest

As for the packaging - if a batmaker doesn't bother to protect his handmade cargo for transit there isn't much hope left in the world!

The bat you've now got from Kippax, is it the same bat?

All pictures are of the same bat, before and after the trip to Kippax. And yes I still have this bat.

Must say never liked this graded one performance line from Kippax and a few others and wavey grains and dead knots like this bat is certainly not what anyone spending £300-£400 should expect. I hope it gets sorted for you but that’s not great mate

Would like to see how they've repaired that crack, I've always considered them a replacement/throwaway piece of damage.

I’ll take off the stickers and take a picture of it later.

Nope, the toe crack appeared once it had returned from having this repaired...

Still waiting on a response regarding the toe crack.

Well I hope this thread has a happy ending eventually, it's only one cleft so to sort it you would not think is a major problem

Where the crack is it can't be repaired, whether the handle is in too tight or the willow is weak, plus the toe crack on top of it, plus the hassle

I was going to ask if this is a 350 quid bat or a cheaper grade but really that is an irrelevant question .

I surprised I have to say, maybe a sensible explanation and outcome will come in the next few days.
