Can this be done with hand tools, by sawing off little pieces and then using a hand held orbital sander to smooth things out?

Yes it can be done.

2 options that work. Use a 60/80 grit on an orbital sander for 2 mins.

Measure the amount you want rounding off on the toe and draw a line to the centre of the toe as a guide. Saw (fine) off and sand.

Yes quite easily get a piece of thin flat card and cut a template of the shape of toe you want from the face of one of your existing bat toes mark the shape onto the front and back of your square bat toe
For greater accuracy prefer to use a two handed rasp tool than a sander also there's less dust so you can see your lines marking that you are working towards.
Smooth with high number grit to finish.

Two minute job with 60 grit
Take your time and don�t take too much off
Make sure you check the bat as you go

Thanks guys... so sawing off doesn't seem necessary ? Just 60 grit on the hand held orbital ?

hand held orbital at 60 will do the trick, i personally have a mini belt sander which does the job even better and i then smooth it out with the orbital.
As others have said, mark what areas you want to round off, very easy
