Hi,
I've just taken ownership of a long handle Newbery bat. It has no grips on currently, and it feels a little toe heavy (2lb 10oz).
I have read that applying more than one grip will help the bat's pick-up. I understand Newbery bats have thinner than standard handles, and my hands are larger than standard, so I feel I can handle (excuse the pun) two grips. I wouldn't fancy more than two though.

How should I go about this?.. I'm thinking...
1) Being a long handle, to add a cheap diamond or chevron 11 inch grip (shorter than needed) as the underneath grip, and then a 12 inch grip over the top. This 12 inch grip will cover the full length of the 11 inch. Is there a suggestion on which two types of grip to use? Maybe grips that go well together to keep thickness down and to improve the grip without the two grips sliding against each other?

2) Use a single 12 inch grip, rather than two grips. Being only a single grip is there an extra thick grip I should use?

To counter balance I do this two half grips over binding from top of handle one two or three cut grips six inches long from top of handle depending on balance and thickness then full grip The grips are chevron

How many grips is quite a personal thing, for me the first thing I do when I get a new stick is chuck an extra one on there but some hate it.

I always use a chevron underneath and a ripple or snake grip over the top, find the flatter chevron styles work best as a base and then something nice and thick and grippy I like on top.

Does that not make your bats a lot heavier especially if using 2.6 bats just get your bat maker to put a thicker handle in or a counter balance Handel or a bit of lead does the same job without affecting the Handel size

Stick on whatever grip set up is most comfortable for you, play around a bit with 1 grip, half a grip at the bottom and one over the top and two grips.

Don't use the grips to aid pick up, sort you grips so that bat os most comfortable in your hands.
Then the pick up will be fine.
If you are moving up weights to 2 10, then you just need to practice with it.

I used to use multiple grips but now have my handles double bound and use a single grip

Feels better and makers can put an extra bind onto a bat if you need

Can you play with two grips a long inning? How do your hands feel?

My experience with grips is that you don't notice any irregularity until your hands and arms get tired.

Here is what I'd suggest you do:
- Put a thin grip as the base grip from top to bottom of your handle.
- Put a second grip for either top or bottom half wherever you like the handle to be thicker. If you want a counter weight, roll half the grip up towards the handle knob and that will give you sufficient counter weight without thickening the handle too much.

If I find the handle too thin I�ll often wrap it with a couple of layers of Kinesiology tape. It gives it a slightly thicker feel while not feeling as squidgy in the hands as two grips.

2.6 and a few grips sounds like a size 6 bat, must you not mean 2.8?

No not a lot heavier when you consider the weight of chevron grips for me bats are about pickup don't want a thick cane handle especially where I grip the bat due to small hands also tried lead flashing wrapped around the top of the handle and lead inserts at the top.
Anything I've tried is always a trade off

Still not sure on what's best but I think I'll go with a cheap, thin diamond or chevron grip as the underneath grip and a GM Matrix on top. But saying that, maybe just a single GM Shock Absorba. Hmm...
Upon further reading, I'm now understanding octopus grips (and similar) ruin gloves. Coloured gloves can seriously stain your gloves.
I have read there are some thick chevron grips about but I haven't found somewhere than sells them. I like chevron grips and a thick one that's around 12 inches long, for my long handle, would be spot on. Does anyone know where I can find one? (note: I know how that sentence must of read but I'm not meaning to be rude).

I go through different grip styles and set ups regularly. Every bat handle is different and therefore requires a different set up. I also like a half grip donut to rest my top hand on. Currently with the Bb20 bat I have 1 and half grips due to thin top of handle. As the guys have said it is all about what feels comfortable in your hands and it does take a bit of trial and error on what set up and grip style you feel most comfortable with.

Put a thick grip on, take it off and put 2 thin ones one. Judge for yourself which you prefer, job done.
