Morne Morkel to retire from international cricket
« on: February 26, 2018, 01:47:44 PM »

Beanpole fast bowler has announced that the upcoming Test series against Australia will be his swan song. Seems a strange time to retire considering he's arguably the leader of their attack with Steyn permanently injured and Philander so injured quite often.

South Africa could end up in the West Indies shoes before too long. Morkel Steyn Philander Amla de Villiers du Plessis will be gone within 12-24 months and their reserves look poor.

I reckon there might be a Kolpack announcement with his name on it soon enough!

It does look like SA are falling apart sadly. Hopefully not as the test world needs them to be strong but it does look thin on the red ball ground talent wise

Yep  a few  SA players have been tipped in the last 12  months to give up test cricket

very similar to the issues being eperienced in South African rugby really - a transformation agenda, a weak currency and big opportunities elsewhere mean that a player has to be in the front half of an international career in which he is more or less an automatic pick for it to be worth staying.

There is the potential I believe, so correct me if I'm wrong(someone usually does!) that unlimited ex SA players could flood the championship here as Kolpaks

Far as I know there is no limit to the amount of players that can come, nothing's happening until Brexit to restrict that(possibly) or if Labour gets in he next election, Brexit is  effectively cancelled anyway.

Quite a few SA guys are over here already for 2018...but could there be more?

There are no limits on  number of Kolpaks. It would be against EU Law if there were. In which case, they wouldn't be Kolpaks anyway?

Errr, not quite right.  There are no limits on the number of qualified Kolpaks, but it is no longer the case as it was a decade ago that anyone could come over.  At present the criteria (being reviewed as I type) are a specific, albeit low, number of international appearances within the past two years.  Bit different for EEA passport holders, obviously, though they are not Kolpaks.

Not sure that's true? Daryn Smit has never played an international game and Tino Best and Ravi Rampaul had gone more than 2 years without an international game.

I think I meant there were no restrictions on the numbers allowed. Rather than there were no restrictions on qualification as one.

Smit is not a Kolpak.

Best and Rampaul were within two years when they started Kolpakking.

I can bore for Britain on the technicalities of immigration legislation...

It's interesting that, a few years back, Trent Copeland wasn't allowed to come back to Northants as an overseas because he hadn't played enough recent international cricket.

That's good  :). So Morkel have literally just finished a test match(!) cannot actually come here on a kolpak deal for an English county for 2018....because it's too soon having played international cricket

Is that right and are you an immigration lawyer ? Haha
