Final league match of the season and came up just short. Opposition scored 143-8 off 40 overs and we ended up with 140-9 off our 40.

In their innings, the lad I support bowled his best spell of the year going for just 11 off 6 overs. Mind you I did tell him he was walking home as he dropped an absolute sitter off my bowling.  In reply we scored 15 off the first 2 overs but quickly lost both openers and then took another 15 overs to reach 30. From then on, we were always behind the run rate and despite scoring over 70 in last 10 overs, we couldn't quite get over the line. In fairness to our opponents, they took a couple of very good catches including a spectacular one-handed caught and bowled which removed the one player who could have got us home in those last few overs with room to spare.

Match played in a great spirit despite me briefly having words with their wicketkeeper who throughout our innings made some absolutely ridiculous claims for caught behind. I had previously laughed off his appeals while umpiring (and so had all his team-mates) but he ran around liked he had just caught the ball to reclaim the Ashes in the penultimate over when I hadn't even got within a foot of a leg-side delivery. Anyhow shook his hand at the end, said "well played" and there was no lasting damage to either party.

Still got 3 friendly matches to play before the end of my 2018 summer season.

We batted first in a dead rubber. We played around with the batting order a bit and only had 10. So a score of 169 against 2nd in the league wasn’t bad. However we only batted 28 of our 40 overs. We have not batted all of our overs in any game this season (including 20/20. I got 69 before being bowled.
We got a heir dange men out early with a low full toss and a half track r but our lack of bowling showed. I had to bowl and got 4-0-1-22. Took 2 catches too. They got them 7 down with about 5 overs to spare. We bowled 45 extras which really didn’t help.
Most importantly we avaoided relegation by finishing 3rd from bottom.
1 ton 6 50’s for me but also 3 ducks so very up and down for me.

My league season finished 2 weeks ago with demotion which was pretty much guaranteed 3 weeks in with a 63 year old opening bowler one league below the a ECB pre league was never going to end well. We were either chasing 250+ or could never post enough runs that the bowling could defend. We posted over 240 in one game with the oppo chasing down in 40 overs easily. Batting wise most of the highs came in the midweek and friendlies with 76no in the 20/20 midweek final against a team with a lot of old school friends. Had a couple league 50s and finished in the 25 runs scorers for league but with a horrendous average. Overall 2018 was a bit of season to forget bring on the 2019 season..

Played a friendly this afternoon and unlike yesterday, I managed to see us crawl over the line.

Opposition posted 165 off 35 overs and I was quite pleased with an early run out then removed their best batsman thanks to a good catch at long on. However, the real fun came when batting as I went in at No.8 with around 40 needed. The bowling was literally out of this world as I got a barrage of perfectly straight moon balls which I had no clue how to play. I did try to swipe one and nearly got caught at square leg so got down the other end and stayed there. What was even more disconcerting was that when this chap ran into bowl, you could hear a tin of mints rattling in his pocket.

Thankfully the other batsman had more of a clue and retired on 50 with around 10 runs needed. With the new batsman, we inched towards the finishing line although victory arrived with something of anti-climax as a new bowler came on with 2 to win and his first 2 deliveries were wides. The umpire who was technically correct (in giving the wides) but surely the winning runs in Sunday friendlies should come off the bat.

Chased down 176 with 3 overs to spare after being 5-2, caught my one catch in the covers, not required to bat.

Off season plans: find a new club and play some lower level Saturday cricket

@rickjames - you should have a chat with the Combe Down boys mate, they were a pleasant bunch and literally a stones throw from you (Cross Keys is a decent boozer for afterwards too!).

Are they south London based? Never heard of them? I was thinking 6th/7ths down in Dulwich, but a nice chap yesterday at Catford Cyphers said I'd be more than welcome to play in their 4s, ha. Left him an email address anyway.

Oh bugger. I've got you mixed up with another member - serves me right for moving around the country so much!!! Sorry haha.

Dulwich are a decent choice though, friend of mine used to play in their 2s. Good set-up as can be expected from such a big club!

I live in Herne Hill, about a 10 minute walk from both Dulwich/Alleyn, then there's places like Streatham and Marlborough also nearby. Only question I'm wondering is where I'd get a game with those first two, plus membership at Dulwich is £200! Jesus.

I am sure I played at Combe Down (near Bath) in my youth. Is it next to a rugby pitch?  One ground I definitely remember was Poplars between Trowbridge and Bath where on Sundays they employed a "6 and out" rule and you don't need to guess what idiot cleared the ropes the only time he batted there. Looked on Google Maps and the pub is there but doesn't look like the ground behind it is used for cricket anymore.

Yeah that's the one @Lumsden.

Poplars is still very much up and running! A teammate of mine plays for them every week - the 6 and out rule is still going strong haha
