Fat Club #2- 2018 Season- Preparing to Succeed
« on: March 20, 2018, 06:59:41 AM »

Good Morning All,

The "Beast from The East" has been and gone; her younger brother- "Mini-Bea" an unplanned mistake- will no doubt leave us soon. Who knows what fair weathers lie in wait for us, with the 2018 UK cricket season a few weeks away.

I make it- selection and weather permitting- 46 days until my first league game, or about 6 1/2 weeks if you will.

I thought I would post a fresh new topic-similar to fat club- for people to share short-cut tips on how to get fighting fit-or as close as damn-it- for the new season.

I have been slowly building up my overall fitness through cardio (Spinning) and kettle-bell training- but not enough! I have also been trying to lose weight, but the blood-sugar diet doesn't seem to be working- I get hunger pangs in the middle of the night and raid the fridge! Yes, it is a habit I can break.

How much weight could we reasonably expect to lose (if necessary) in the next 6 weeks, to make us lighter on my feet, and less-likely to tire after facing 30 deliveries!?

My right shoulder aches after years of mis-use and abuse- can I dull the pain through psysio/chiropractical means-or strength-training with my beloved, dusty theraband?!

How can we make ourselves  stronger in a matter of weeks- to help us smash the ball to all parts?

How Can we train/re-train the eye to improve hand-eye co-ordination? To help us pick up length quicker, in order to pounce on anything short?

How to build up cricket-relevant stamina- do we have to accept that running, in particular high-intensity interval-training- is the way forward?

What drills can we use to make the most out of our net sessions?

It would be great if we could help to motivate eachother in the next few weeks- so we can give us the best possible chance to have an enjoyable and successful '18 season.

Good luck and God speed!

I'm a keen cyclist so i've been able to cycle indoors on my turbo trainer over the winter so i've retained most of my CV fitness, however i've put on a few pounds over the winter what with beer and snacks aplenty!

I think reasonably, on a low fat diet and cutting out the snacks along with trying to do some cardio a couple of times a week, you could lose between 2-3lbs a week. Which is quite a lot over six weeks totalling around 1 stone - not an insignificant amount for anyone to lose.

Can't overestimate the values of body-strength training. Push ups, sit ups, planks, star jumps etc. There's a great app I have called Seven which is basically a seven minute work out to do each day, do it in the morning when I get up and it doesn't impact my routine at all and helps with overall strength.

Interesting point about the cricket-specific fitness though. I've been practicing turning my arm over with a training ball down the side of my house against the gate for about 20 balls a night (snow permitting!). Only takes about 15-20 mins max and as i'm a spinner I don't need a big run up or a new gate (yet!). Been doing that for a few weeks which has helped loosen my shoulders up a bit.

With regards to batting i've found that if I use one of those running weights (I think they only go up to like 5lbs) and do some reps on each arm I can do that of an evening whilst sat down and it helps tone the batting muscles. I saw somewhere online about using one of the 2/3lb ones to simulate a bat, which you can swing around like you're playing shots or just swing backwards and forwards in your house without having to risk breaking anything/anyone with a real bat. Not tried that one yet but that was an interesting technique.

If you want an app based fitness tool, freeletics is great. All body weight, growing in intensity.

For a studio based session, definitely insanity. It's hard work and you feel it the day after for a while, but you can feel the difference after a few sessions. It's 45 mins of exercise to music, gradually getting more intense and difficult, all dynamic exercises which is good for cricket Imo.

Try keto diet. My friend lost 18 pounds in a month with a little workout.
