Another England selection thread
« on: March 28, 2018, 08:42:22 PM »

To save the nz test thread:

England’s problems openers number 3 spinner quick

Openers I would go with hammeed if he has a good start to the season in place of either cook or stoneman at the minute

Spinner probably don Bess or jack leach

Quick not sure about probably someone in heard of but has played lions/north vs south/mcc

I’d really like to see for the first test:

Cook/hameed
Stoneman/hammeed
Bairstow
Root
Malan
Stokes
Foakes
Woakes
A quick
Bess
Anderson

The quick will be broad but I think he’s gone

4 seamers Anderson woakes stokes a quick
Spinner in Bess
Keeper batsman to grow into the role
Bairstow probably the most able to adapt to three other than root

However if alex Davies has a belter I’d a start to the season he opens (and maybe keeps)

And Livingstone can slot in instead of foakes

Constructive criticism only and go - who would you pick and why? Who else is there?

I'd go..

Cook
Hameed
Stoneman
Root
Malan
Stokes
Bairstow (W)
Woakes
Broad
Leach
Anderson

Bairstow seems desperate not to loose the gloves and take on more batting responsibility (His loss really). Been struggling to take the shine off the new nut for Root and co so playing three openers in the hope 2 of 3 stick around. Broads form is worrying but not too many sticking there hand up Overton has done ok bit worrying considering Anderson hasn't got long left..

There's players outside the squad mentioned

This is a side for the first test of the summer right? Which I think is may against Pakistan or the West Indies

I'd drop Cook down to 3. To open? Draw them out of a hat

Yeah summer, I’ve written off us doing anything other than  average in nz

If I had to pick a side now it would be more in hope that actual solid reasoning

Cook....not sure he will be there but I'm stil backing him
Stoneman...same with him
Hameed...I hope he gets early season form  I think he has the temperament
Root
Malan
Stokes
Bairstow
Woakes
Overton or broad. Very similar bowlers
Anderson
Leach...in that we desperately need a spinner.he may or may not be the answer.

No place for Ali I'm afraid I think we need a specialist now in that position.

If we played Foakes which we might do it would mean dropping a bowler but that may be possible if Leach can hold one end up(similar to Swann when he played). But we are not really a strong enough side to do that I don't think at the moment.

If I were genuinely in charge? Muhaha...

Hameed
Stoneman
Malan
Root
Stokes
Bairstow
Livingstone
Woakes
Roland-Jones*
Bess (or Leach)
Anderson

I've asterixed TRJ because I would be happy with him as our third seamer early season. The caveat would be that the counties are persuaded to given Garton, Mahmood and Helm a run at the start of the year to see who our best young quick is.

Another way to get Foakes in would be to only play 2 openers instead of 3.

Leach averages 12 with one first class 50.
Swanny had first class tons and a much healthier looking average so you could loosely say he could bat too.

As much as I want England to find a permanent spin solution is there a place in modern cricket for a specialist spinner? Much like keepers I have the feeling people want someone who can bat as well as carry out their primary task.

A possible way of trying to get all of the youngsters in would be to call time on Mr Cook's career!

There are actually a few options for most positions but the selectors are unlikely to change half the side between now and the summer.

Hameed/Browne/Cook
Stoneman/Burns/Bell-Drummond
Root
Malan/Livingstone/Northeast
Bairstow
Stokes
Foakes
Woakes
Roland-Jones/Overton
Leach/Bess/Crane
Anderson
