Spirit of Cricket Rankings
« on: April 04, 2018, 01:17:58 PM »

hi all,

i was just listening to Tuffers and Vaughan and they were posed an interesting question in the light of everything going on -

If you were to rank the 10 test playing nations in how they currently play the game in the 'Spirit of Cricket' what would the ranking look like - 1 being playing in the best spirit, 10 the worst.

My order is below -

1. New Zealand
2. West Indies
3. Zimbabwe
4. Sri Lanka
5. England
6. Pakistan
7. South Africa
8. India
9. Bangladesh
10. Australia

Not entirely related but some of these are a funny read.

Might want to rethink WI!

That's there Under 19's that caused the problems

Owais Shah was UAE coach. While in the dugout he was overheard shouting '(No Swearing Please) chase it!' and '(No Swearing Please) get there quicker!' to one of his players in the field chasing the ball towards the boundary.

@Kulli yeah there are some funny ones on there. I found this one.

Basit is the team manager. He removed the middle stump from the pitch to use for pre-match practice. The 4th umpire asked him to return it and he asked how he was. The 4th umpire said you should know by my umpires uniform. Basit then shouted at the 4th umpire in front of players that he didn't care that he was the 4th umpire or about his uniform.

I like how these lists always end up with the smaller nations normally at the top, because they never win consistently enough to upset everybody else. It's quite patronising when you think about it

I think SA are usually near the top. This series or any against the Aussies or Indians seems to bring the worst out in them/any team.

It used to annoy a lot of Kiwi's that our team was too nice at times. After Baz took over though it showed that we could still win and treat the opposition with respect.
Most of our teams a like that. The All Blacks have always been very humble and sportsmanlike and they have dominated Rugby for as long as I can remember.

A quote I like is from Lance Armstrong "A ruthless desire to win at all costs was my biggest flaw"

When you beat players/teams with that attitude it makes the victory so much sweeter.

Personally I think the Kiwi's have always played to win and played to enjoy themselves.

There is clear daylight between them and everyone else, who are all much the same.

Where Smith did not tread, during his analysis of an appalling series for him and his team, was into the realm of gamesmanship. Not just sledging (although that played a big role) but in the ability to manipulate home advantage in every possible way, and then some.

The "emotional blackmail" type of pressure was applied to Smith when he agreed to play on a sodden, muddy outfield at Wellington. This was immediately followed up in the fourth match by New Zealand pressurising the Dunedin groundsman to ensure there was no chance of a shortened slog match, despite the fact that it was sunny and the outfield was dry. South Africa's big hitters naturally fancied their chances, particularly after Smith had won the toss and given them the chance to chase a target.

But Fleming saved his brilliant best for for the series-decider at Eden Park. He launched a premeditated and calculated attack of unusually graphic abuse at Smith, just moments before he went out to start his team's run-chase.

They won the Spirit of Cricket award that year iirc  ;)

I can remember Smith and Fleming at each other that series. We were absolute rubbish through the 90s.

Don't you mean since his redemption. As much as I admire Brendon (And I really do both as a player and a person) he wasn't that much of a saint until later in his career - by his own admission.

No doubting from the last few years he was skipper to now they've been playing the game in exactly the right way in my opinion. Hard cricket, but fair and probably great guys to have a beer with at the end of the game.

Big fan of NZ, the current Pakistan side and Sri Lanka...
WI and South Africa are probably similar.
England, India and Australia are just as bad as each other.
(Obviously discounting the current scandal).

Put it this way, I'd have a beer with NZ (just good blokes) or WI (ridiculous larger than life characters) than any of the England or Australia team.

SA (miserable Afrikaaners), India (arrogant) and Pakistan (cheats) can all GTF as well.
