Broken arm recovery tips/exercises
« on: April 06, 2018, 06:06:55 AM »

Broke my left forearm in late January (fell skiing, ulna, clean break) plaster is now off and the doctors has given me the ok to start playing again.

First net last night, bowling was obviously no issue, although the callus on my finger is gone and I now have a huge blood blister. But when batting I noticed a real lack of strength. I’d say my batting is fairly top hand dominated so it had a huge effect. Lack of power, struggling to bring the bat down straight etc.

Obviously this strength will come back with time but does anyone have experience with a similar recover that can give me some tips/exercises to speed things along.

Cheers

hey Kulli

I broke my left forearm last year on 14th March and played my first game of the season on 4th June. Sounds like I had pretty much the same break as you.

I was lucky enough to have private medical insurance through work so I was able to get weekly physio sessions which helped to strengthen my arm. It was mainly my wrist which had become stiff and immobile after 6 weeks in plaster. I highly recommend you do likewise, even if you have to fund it yourself.

Honestly, a year on from breaking my arm it's like it never happened. I get no problems with it whatsoever.

No pain for it, and no fear of getting hit on it(partly due to some snazzy new body armour from @StrettonFox Sports. Justa real strength issue, I can barely lift the bat up left handed only.

Hey Rich,

Sold my soul to the oil man so work will cover any physio. How long after you got the cast off and started playing again before it felt anywhere near normal?

I know it will go back to normal as it was an 'good' break, just want to do all I can to speed up the process with the first league games 3 weeks away.

Recovery time is partly pot luck - I've broken both my lower legs over the past few years, the first time I was back playing 1s as a seamer 10 days after I got the cast off, the second it took me a full season before I was confident bowling without an ankle brace.
Physio will sort you out but if in doubt, just exercise it as much as you can, if I remember right lots of wrist exercise for a broken arm!

I had the cast off in mid May and was ready to play by early June so you may have a similar timeline. FWIW I scored 50 in that first game having not picked up a bat for 9 months.

Main exercises I did:

1. Literally pull and push your wrist through it’s full range of motion and hold it for as long as you can - this will hurt a lot but it’s likely just stiff rather than causing damage
2. Rest your arm on a cushion and flex it up and down, side to side using a light weight (1/2kg)

Note I am not a Physio and while these exercises worked for me you should seek expert advice

The hand exerciser things you can get (like what rock climbers use) can help build up the strength in your forearm and can be set nice and easy to begin with. Good luck with the recovery arm break are annoying as hell!

Agree with @richthekeeper and @ad2606 re exercise recommendations.  Rolling stress balls in your hands(fattus , are you there ?) is something else that may strengthen the wrist/ forearm too .
.......I'm trying to act my age and resist the infantile joke-recommendation of what exercise would strengthen the forearm . Having . Difficulty.   ;) :o :D
