Has James Vince officially lost it??
« on: April 11, 2018, 07:03:53 PM »

His quote on how he felt he performed this winter is below. Has he officially lost it or is this a sign of the issue with the current England side and nobody striving to be great??

Quote
"I showed during the winter I'm comfortable at that level. Running myself out on 80-odd in the first Test at Brisbane probably wasn't ideal.

"If I'd turned that into a century or 150, there probably would've been more confidence for the rest of the series.

"I did a lot of stuff well, it's just a case of doing it for longer. It was a high-profile series in Australia and you do get a bit of stick, but then that's motivation to prove people wrong."

Isn't that just the classic mindset of elite-level sportsmen? All self-belief and confidence.
That's why I've never been any good at cricket  :D :D :D

Eek.

Shouldn't he say;

"I showed all winter I can perform at that level, as long as it's in thirty minute bursts with no slips, and Mitch Starch promises not to move the ball off straight. Otherwise, yeah, it's Groundhog day"

It absolutely is your right, quite uncommon to have a personality like.....let's say Bell for example.....who does not have that unflinching self belief some others do.

A really really good read was robin smith 'quest for number 1' - superb player, one of my favourites actually, but racked by doubt, lack of confidence and other mental issues that may of held him back.

Anyone who saw him face the might of the windies, that's when they were mighty, could not doubt his ability and sheer skill.

However.... :) I think Vince will be kept ,and Stoneman binned to make way for hameed/Jennings/Clarke/gubbins

Probably it will be hameed back in.

It does beg the question what is more important, skill level or mental strength.
Vince has he shots, does he have the intelligence and toughness to bat all day?

Or does it not matter anymore if you can bat all day?

Best example for me is Nick Compton. Excellent batsman- but thinks too much.

Shoot me down here if you want but I don't see that much wrong in what he's said there. He looked great in parts over the winter on a your where nobody really shone. I'd stick with him but at 5, as I think be could be a very good player at level once he's worked the mental side out. It sometimes takes time for certain players to click, but there's no doubting he has talent.

That's interesting. I just don't see anything wrong with his statement. He is essentially saying that he had bad luck or made stupid mistakes and if given the opportunity, he'll become a polished article.

This is where I feel team India deserves a lot of credit, they give their talent sufficient time/chances to develop and reap the benefits of the patient approach later.

I think we can all agree that Vince is better than us all. He’s not going to say it all went to sheet to the media is he?

That’s far too balanced an assessment @jonny77

Have you checked your pitchfork for rust?

😀

:D To be honest I like a maverick. Always liked the guy who oozes class for 30 or 40 over someone who grinds out a drab 80. Style over substance every time!

Thing is, after 14 tests anyone with a modicum of talent should've hit three figures. Lyth, Robson, Ballance, Jennings (I mean, really...) all did. At the same stage, players with a better test record include Tim Bresnan and Alex Tudor...

Are James Vince and Tom Westley actually the same person?

Very similar England careers to date.

Pro player speaking to the media. He’s hardly going to be honest. Just PR spin

Would you not have hoped the talk coming out of the dressing room was how they need to improve and do things better and that they weren't good enough?
