Performance loss post rehandle and refurb

Hi guys,

i have an SS maximus which was an absolute gem of a bat (low density cleft, nicely pressed, and super ping).
i just had it rehandled and refurbed.
the feel of the bat is now completely different. it feels to me like its been repressed and feels very hard and planky - basically like a piece of crap and i cannot believe it is even the same piece of willow.
is this normal? and why might this be happening?
is it the new handle? is it possible they sanded so much wood off the face it needs to be reknocked-in or something?

any thoughts why this is happening and how to improve it?

A bat frequently feels fantastic when the handle has slightly broken. As Kulli says you just need to use the bat.

Handle weights can vary massively too. It can change the balance of a bat completely.

Where did you get it done? Only had a rehandle done once. MY H4L came back with a new handle and the bat was exactly as brilliant as it was when I sent it off. The size and shape was spot on too.

Interesting... so loosening up the new handle would improve ping? Or just the feel?

Being an SS, the original handle was thin, had quite some flex, and pinged like anything straight out of the wrapper.
After a while the handle flex got so extreme it was broken as it was losing power on shots, though felt nice due to the give.
I thought replacing the handle with a new stiffer one it would lose less energy on shots, but i think its lost both power and the soft feel.

@Gurujames im in aus and got it repaired at a large cricket retailer here that does there repairs in house by their proclaimed batdoctor. I would say the quality of the work done on it was sloppy. Shaping is lumpy at the bottom of the handle, back was only half sanded with rough grit and feels furry, didnt oil the face and so much bat tape on the toe its impacted the pickup. Not to mention a few chips and tens on small dents from handling which the didnt steam out. Won't be going back there for repairs!

Loosening  the handle won't improve the ping as stiffness equals ping a lose handle will give you flexibility  ie feel that's what your missing from your old handle

I had a h4l fifty/50 last season. First game ton second game 50 then handle snapped in nets session. Got repaired locally. Bat totally different. Original handle round and thin with counterbalance top. New handle thicker and oval. Bat was heavier on scales and picks up heavier too. It is sitting in garage, I netted with it couple of times but wasn’t happy to use it a game. Real pity was cracking bat and prob still is for someone else.

Depends if the source of the second handle is a different manufacturer. That's be my guess.

If you got the manufacturer of the bat to do it, I'd hope it was a closer fit.

Had a ton vision bat that pinged great, but handle was too thin and flexing. Handle broke in middle after a month and I got it replaced with a thicker handle from a reputed place. The bat felt like a plank ever since and just like OP explained, I couldn't believe it was the same bat. After few net sessions, the bat broke on the shoulder. In the end, it was just money and time wasted on the rehandling..

Is it just the "feel" of the ball's rebound that is different or the actual rebound is diminished?

The sound a bat makes or how the handle feels can be deceptive and may not accurately reflect how the ball is rebounding off the face. Bouncing a ball on the bat in your room is the worst way to check for a bat's ping. :)

Use the bat in nets for a few sessions. A loose handle will feel better but the blade, regardless, should be fine (as it was before).
