My brother lives about a mile from Headingley. He tells me his garden has had snow coverage for five of the last six weeks. I think criticism is similar to blaming Worcestershire when New Road floods.

There's only so much a groundsman can do, he hasn't the power to change the weather sadly.

From the looks of it after reading the Yorkshire CCC's website it has just been a culmination of factors that have come together to create the situation the club finds itself in;

-worst winter for 30 years (according to York Groundsman)
-high water table
-lack of heat
-persistent rainfall with no large gap in between showers to allow drying and ground recuperation

Yes you could cover the entire ground in covers but that doesn't solve the issue of the ground underneath being saturated to capacity. Hopefully this dry spell we're supposed to have this week will help a few groundsman around the country, if not then the County Championship will continue see teams being bowled out for under 100 in both innings

Permission to wade in here.

There's been so much rain in Yorkshire that pitches are at least 3-4 weeks behind schedule. The whole of the Yorkshire League fixtures for the 21st April were postponed on the 5th. That's two and a half weeks early and the league have never done that before.

The Heworth CC pitch has some of the best drainage in the league, and even if it is dry and hot for the rest of the week, it is still unlikely to be playable for another week or two.

The water is still coming up from the ground when you walk on it and it hasn't rained since the end of last week.

I live in Cumbria where it rains every other day (so I know what it's like have fields water logged for weeks even when there's been no rain) and can genuinely believe something like this could happen when the right set of circumstances come together.

Our ground in Sheffield is still covered in standing water from a high water table and copious amounts of rain/snow in last few weeks. Square mowed once but no rolling yet. Outfield impossible to cut. Last season I�d cut outfield twice and it had been hand raked.

None of you Yorkies are bothered because you were going to get stuffed by the mighty Essex if they did get on

On a serious note, there is decent drainage at headingley, it's never been an issue before, and if it drained like a sieve it'd turn into a dry, dead nothing pitch. I'm pretty fine with it, given it gives the test grounds some variety.

It seems to me that it's quite often feast or famine when it comes to rainfall in Yorkshire. I think last spring was particularly dry but the previous year we had a wet March + early April and the first time we got on the square to do any work was 2 weeks before the start of the season.

Honestly? I suspect Essex would have been strong favourites. Aside from the massive advantage of being able to force Yorkshire to bat first, we were missing Root, Bairstow, Willey, Plunkett, Patterson, Fisher, Coad... I was hoping for a call up, honestly I was!

I would tend to agree that Yorkshire have lost out pretty badly from England and a bit form the IPL. 2 for England & 2 for the IPL isn't great, although in fairness if everyone is fit, Willey & Plunkett probably don't get in the team? Thinking you'd have Bresnan, Brooks, Coad a spinner (Carver or Rafique I'm guessing?) and maybe Patterson or Fisher?

Also the loss of Rashid doesn't help you boys, given he can bat in the Top 7 and would have bowled a few overs,

What could they seriously have done. You can have the best drainage going but if it rods it down for days on end there's not a lot you can do.

Although Somerset aren't playing until Fri if they had been I doubt they would have seen any play at all too.
