Is this genuine?
« on: May 02, 2018, 01:55:14 PM »

Hi all,

I bought what claimed to be a GN Players bat on eBay last week. It arrived today and I am now unsure as to whether it genuine. It was described as such;

"Top of the range Gray-nicolls PLAYERS cricket bat. SH and weighs around 2.10. No cracks what so ever. Genuine toe guard and handle grip (please see pictures). I have applied new grip but will also post the genuine grip. The whole bat is covered with protective sheet. I placed protective tape on the toe for extra safety. Excellent ping. I have few bats therefore clearing out. No reserve. Any questions, please ask. Please only bid if you like the bat. Happy biding."

This is the link: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/gray-nicolls-PLAYERS-cricket-bat-sh-/263609780404?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&nma=true&si=bUQdRxvlhlshd47fVmBdxk8fnBs%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

Besides the Players sticker on the back and the silver sticker on the shoulder, I thought this looked legit, but am now unsure. The profile is much more convex than I expected, and there is no evidence of branding on the edges, which are smaller than I anticipated. There is a stamp on one shoulder, as pictured, which looks like 'c'. It looks like the stickers have been taken up so that tape could be applied as it is under the stickers around the splice.

I also discovered, on my first glance, that the binding has been removed from the handle, and that there is a crack from the ears into the shoulder. It was described as "no cracks whatsoever". If the opinion is that this is fake, or the crack is serious, I will be returning it to the seller straight away. At the very least, the bat is badly described in my opinion. Pics are below to help with opinions, which are all much appreciated!

The stickers appear to be genuine, but I don't think it's a new model.

As the fibreglass is under the stickers, my guess it's a genuine Gray Nicolls that has been sent back for a repair and refurb.

I'd be more concerned that the tape round the splice is present personally, as that implies some work has been done around that area of the bat.

It’s had a new handle in it and a dowel put in which was not in the listing by the look of it and looks a older model gn will put stickers on different models if it’s been sent back to them

As said likely genuine but very old, I'd be returning it

Very annoying if that is the case. I have messaged the seller asking if they were aware of the shoulder damage, and if there is any reason why there is no binding. Hoping for an explanation.

I will see what the seller says in response to my message, but I am leaning that way.

Gray Nics I've had have always had two shoulder stamps. Genuine or no, with the split and a dowel through the shoulder it'd be going straight back if it were me!

I think that's a Gray Nicolls predator from circa 2000 from the shape. As has been said I think it's a GN refurb job with players stickers and maybe high grade model. My classic GN's both models Ultimate and players do not have toe guards and came with natural finish as have all the GN classic bats Iv seen in recent years been natural finishes.
As you say I think a bit of a dodgy listing

Reply received:

"Dear Buyer, I received your email claiming the crack and item not properly described. The pictures are still on the web and it clearly shows all around of the bat including front and back. If you zoom in you can clearly see no cracks anywhere. Can you please show me the crack in the pictures which I advertised for sale on ebay. Many thanks. Regards,"

If you check the listing (linked in my original post), there are no pictures that show the shoulder that is damaged closely enough to see the crack.

I can see this going into eBay disputes.

oh dear think you are right about it going to a dispute.

when he says in his reply "Can you please show me the crack in the pictures which I advertised for sale on ebay." - surely the fact that there isn't a photo of any crack is the point, because you wouldn't have bought the bat if you would have seen the crack!

Precisely. I replied saying that there were no images in the listing zoomed in enough/high enough resolution to see the crack. I would definitely not have bought it if id seen the crack as I believed from the stickers it was a modern Players and from the description without any damage.

I've sent the very same image as I uploaded above of the handle/crack.
