Mission Accomplished!
« on: May 08, 2018, 08:33:40 AM »

So, 15 months ago I had a tree and a project. Fell it, log it, split it, season it, choose a cleft, make a bat and score at least 1 run with it. Last Sunday I'm happy to say I finally managed to complete this challenge, scoring 19 against Battisford 2s in our first game of the season, and then throwing my wicket away in characteristic fashion. Thanks to all of you who have followed this with me, I appreciate all the support, useful information and other comments over the past months.

Now you need to do the same from a sapling you planted :)

Yes! That's the long term plan. The sapling I can count on, but will the knees last another 15-18 years...

Surely even with no knee's, you can manage a single single! :)

How did it feel JK?

Hi mate, it felt good, and went pretty well. It has only been very mildly knocked in so will probably improve with further use. I'd tried it in the nets a couple of times to get used to it, so was fairly comfortable. I hit a couple of nice cuts during the inning, as well as one drive that wasn't fully middled and squeaked over mid-off.

It is a bit heavier than I would normally use, I left some extra wood on it to protect the big knot in the back and various areas of storm damage that are another 'feature'! My guess is it will continue to dry out a bit now the weather is better, and later in the season when I'm fully confident of it holding together I might take a little more weight off.

Quite right, I will manage somehow. As an aside, my opening partner on Sunday was Suffolk/Essex legend John Stuck. He's now 74 and still playing up to 5 times a week. John has scored over 100,000 runs during his career, including 201 centuries. It's honestly quite inspiring to walk out to bat with him, I reckon if he can do that, I can play at least into my 60's!

Thanks bud and yes, it was a great game, we were just on the wrong end of the result! No matter, days like that are what we all wake up for. For sure we should catch up, PM me and we can find a good moment.

Does this count as fully hand made?!

Pretty close I guess. I bought the handle of course, and the pressing was done for me, but apart from that it was all done in the garage.
