Batting in a new role - Role of a number 6 Batsman?
« on: May 09, 2018, 12:44:45 PM »

Hi all,

Having missed our opening league game due to being on childcare duty while my partner had her Hen Do. In my absence the team won and batted very well. The top 4 all scored runs . As i return this week i have been informed by our new skipper that I will be batting at 6 this week due to how well everyone did last week. Frustrating as I have worked hard during the winter. However I understand as they all did well. It was also our first game in a lower league too after being relgated last season however i enjoyed a good season with the bat - so it is frustrating.

So my question is - what is my role now? Having always really only ever batted in the top 4/5 I am not sure on my role when / if i get my chance. I know you play the match situation but swinging from the hip isnt my game (as those who have been to CBF nets I have attended i am sure can vouch for lol) Its decent of the new skipper to let me know so I can get my head around it lol

Either you’ll be finishing the game in a Chase
Pushing the runs to get a big score when setting
Or rebuilding after a collapse

You’ll probably be facing spin or tired/rested opening bowlers

Either way - go out maximise your runs and have some with with it!!

Don't overthink it Tony

Go out with the mindset you have to bomb whoever is bowling  ;)

To steal Matt's examples

Either you’ll be finishing the game in a Chase
Hit bombs to finish it quickly

Pushing the runs to get a big score when setting
Hit bombs to make the target as big as possible

Or rebuilding after a collapse
Attack is the best form of defence. Hit bombs so the opposition don't think they're on top

Not heard that term before can not sure I can hit a bomb haha

I shall practice in this evening game lol

Yes perhaps I am over thinking things here but also frustrating

But I think Matt summed it up well thanks matt

Chances are you will be walking out at 70-4 and you can bat time.
Alternatively there will be a drop out and you will be in the top four anyway.

I actually think it is really good of the skipper to tell you your role in advance like he has.

batting at 6 is  a crucial position but Knowing where your batting in advance gives you the opportunity to work out several game plans for different situations for exsample  you might be running out of overs and have to look for quick runs to get your team  a total or  over the line or might you have to bat till the innings close or take most of the strike and protect the tail.
Batting at 6 you need to able to adapt your innings to the match situation.
That said always felt if your teams wicketkeeper can bat he should bat at 6

I'm exactly in your role now but your decades younger so try this: opened for best part of 25 years I didn't know what an old ball was....2015 saw an annus  horriblis of gigantic proportions, slipped down the order so far I was nearly a bowler....wait it gets worse....so got a few overs to push the score along at the end....found I couldn't really do that and dropped myself to the thirds for end of season.

Due to some players on holiday a surprise call up back to my old team even thou the skipper had said I am 'not in his plans...at all' which was fair enough
But my,opening spot was gone. So I decided whatever position they want me to bat I take it. So back in number 5 and 6 for 2016 and a resurgence back to half decent form (average 27), a tough 2017 against div 1 bowling followed but I'm still in the team batting 5 or 6, which gives me a break after fielding, or a rest to relax before batting.my opening spot has gone and won't come back, younger guys took my spot(that's good).

Here's what I worked on and am still working on:

Rotate the strike more...more gaps in the field so try to get singles.
Don't panic about hitting out..strong correct shots still work, technique still matters
Gamble.....if the fields in...back yourself to get it up and over.
Be positive, odds in your favour for hard hits shots-if they catch you right off the middle good luck to them.
Don't worry about a few low scores....your team(should) know you take risks down the order
You have to bat the overs try to hang in there, everyone wants to bat with a player that looks for the ones and twos as well as the boundary.

The above things I'm still working on.... :)

God that was a long reply sorry!

Used to love batting 6. Definitely some of my favourite knocks there.

In some circles that believe your best batter should be 3, I've had discussions that your 2nd best should be at 6 (specialist openers aside) - really helps you develop a versatile game.

If the top 5 have done a good job, then it's pressure off, license to thrill territory.

The other extreme is rebuilding from 10-4 and learning to martial a tail.

...and then any other situation between those 2 ends of the spectrum.

Will help develop your match awareness and game management no end if you get given a decent run at that slot. Probably something you grow into though, so as others have mentioned, I wouldn't overthink it too much, nor let it daunt you.

Good luck... And enjoy it!

Depends on the situation and the format mate. If you're in there with more than 12 overs to spare you need to rotate the strike and build a partnership. If you're in at the death, close your eyes and throw the kitchen sink at everything. Cheers!

hey all,

well I thought I shall give you an update on this.

Turned up to saturdays match in positive mood - we lost the toss and were put in - Toss did feel imprtant but not crucial but there was abit of mosture in the air and the pitch was a bit damp. I indeed batted 6.....and went in after 14 overs.....with the score 14/4 a rebuild was needed. I dug in. My partner wanted to push the singles as the outfield was slow. This was ok until a misunderstanding he was run out. I ran out of partners in the end as batsman failed to see that application was needed and We finished with 58 all out me 9 not out lol

I expect to be batting in my normal spot next week after our new skippers new idea of gungho cricket clearly needs a rethink lol
