Redback delamination repair

Hi all

I had the day off work today so thought I'd make a start trying to repair a bat a teammate gave to me last Saturday.

For a bit of background he bought this in 2010 and it was the only bat he owned (mad, right?). On a particularly rainy day in August he used it and some moisture got into the toe. He then carried un using it until it started "making a strange noise" so he retired it and bought a new one.
He kept hold of it "just in case it was saveable" and passed it to me last weekend.

I took the scuff sheet off to see what I was working with, and as you'll see in the pictures there is a fairly large area of the bat that has delaminated from the toe up.

And a very quick update.

I got plenty of glue into the delaminated area today, and have clamped it nice and tight.

Hopefully it turns out to be a solid repair and the bat will have plenty of life left in it once I've finished.

Update no.1

After having a good 30 hours or so to dry I removed the clamps.

There was a bit of cardboard stuck the the bat, but the repair seemed to have held well.



Having removed the string I'd used to initially hold things in place, there were a couple of dents where I'd done the clamps a bit tight (d'oh!)
I've given the bat a quick rough sand to remove any glue residue there are a couple of deeper string shaped dents.



I'll have a think about the best way to sort out the dents I've caused, but there are a couple of minor cracks on the right handers inside edge that need sorting out before I give the bat a fine sand.

I'm playing a match tomorrow and am going to the Ageas Bowl on Sunday, so another update is unlikely before Monday.

Good job. There’s something thing satisfying about a delamination repair.
Cut blocks that fit over the back of the spine, these prevent clamp marks on the back of the bat.

Looking good Cam what thoughts did you have on the cardboard used to temporarily fix the repair?

The cardboard wasn't part of the repair as such, it was there so the clamps didn't mark the willow when they were tightened.

Use thin sheet material like 4mm MDf instead Of cardboard, it will spread the pressure better over the glued area. Use a sheet of plaster underneath so it doesn’t stick to the bat. A shopping bag works well.

Yeah I'll definitely do that next time, cardboard was all I had to hand at the time and it clearly wasn't the best option!

Update number 2

I decided to steam the deeper dents out of the face before sanding again, which seemed to have done the trick.

This wasn't as aggressive a sand as in the last update, but it isn't what you'd call a fine sand either, so there is still plenty to do!





There is still a small crack in the toe that I will need to seal before finishing this one off.



But my priority today was to repair the damage to the toe/inside edge which appears to have suffered a hard life.



That has been glued and I have used tightly wrapped fibreglass tape to hod everything in place.



Once the glue has dried, that will be the "major repair work" done.
The next step will be to seal the toe and a couple of small surface cracks, before fine sanding and returning it to the owner in a (hopefully) usable state.

Just a quick update today, what with being at work until 17.30 and the torrential rain most of the day I didn't have a lot of time to work on her today.

I removed the tape and the repair to the inside edge appears to be solid.



I also gave the back a quick sand to remove the worse of the gaffa tape residue



I then filled the minor cracks with some super glue



And gave it a sand while the glue was still wet to seal them nicely



And lastly I have packed the small crack in the face with glue and will leave this to set over night.



That's all the repair work now done. Once the glue on the face has set I will need to fine sand the bat all over, apply a scuff sheet and put some bat wax on the exposed willow.

I'm fairly pleased with the way this has come out so far, especially considering the state ti came to me in. Once I've finished the bat up I'll post some final pictures of how it looks when I return it to the owner.
