The title is self explanatory. I was really impressed by how @sarg does toe guards on the bats he reviews/prepares. And I'd like to know how he does it. It'd be mighty appreciated if he did a small video on his yt channel explaining the process and the materials used. Looks to be a much more sustainable and better looking option than having to stick the toe guard back on every couple of weeks. Cheers!

Ps. I also loved his views on different types of scuff sheets. Really good information.

Errr No.

There is no way i will disclose my secret two layers of linseed oil followed by one layer of a clear oil based varnish before finishing with a single later of shoe goo (waiting for each coat to dry). Never.

Damn. I had it made until I wrote all that down. @Mfarank

I don�t want a brittle toe. Oils penetrate the toe, but before it fully sets I very lightly varnish the toe and stand it upside down. The varnish should seal the ends of the fibres in a capillary action. it also makes a tacky surface that the shoe goo bonds too really well.

I did do two layers of varnish, but I have stopped that.

As always , nice work sarg .
I have been doing shoe goo toes for about 25yrs so i know how to get a nice , neat surface (it is actually easy , once the outer surface forms a skin and is touch dry you can use your fingers to smooth out the surface etc) . But , i think a lot of people avoid shoe goo simply because they tried it once or twice , got messy results , and then avoided it in the future .
I say the newbies should stick it out , even practice doing a couple of old bats first , until they are confident .

Can confirm that's me...have done a couple of personal bats over the years but never been satisfied with the finish I was able to get...being incredibly fussy I generally went without...will definitely give it another crack with the tips...thankfully I can thank @sarg for the awesome finish on the new stick!

Apply with a knife. spread it out. Then lick your finger and spread it around and smooth it out. Like applying silicone. don't lick your finger afterwards lol.

then stand it upside down and leave it for 24 hours. I use a cloth buffer to get a nice edge.

I know someone who over the years has eaten about 2kgs of the stuff , finger licking good , it is the best protection for your bats toe bu far , now marc @sarg , do you prefer to oil or wax a bat , that is another question for you to share your knowledge on

For me , initially a couple coats of oil. Then wax the back/exposed areas , then maintain with wax .
Others like Mr Myagi prefer to wax on , wax off . ( oh no , he didn't, did he ?)

Interesting to see others getting great results with varied techniques. Go to show, once you've done a few shoe goo toes, and become familiar with its spreading/curing/drying tendencies , you can start to get confident with what you can do to the stuff while still getting good results.

1 more vote for shoe goo. Much more resilient than a toe guard.
You can always use masking tape before you put the goo on, leave it for a minute, and then peel it away to leave a nice sharp edge.
Oh, be very careful about ingesting that stuff. The tube I have is labelled as a likely carcinogen.
Keep a small bit of water handy to smooth the goo with. I'd avise not to keep licking your finger.
