One of the best batsmen to watch in my opinion even better on the cover drive than James vince, in my view I would add him into a squad if butler continues to disappoint to allow Pope to bat 6, bell to 3 to allow Root back to his favoured No 4 spot, think he would have 2 years of Test cricket left in him

I've always been a Bell supporter, but he deserved to be dropped when he was. Recalling him now would say more about the lack of viable alternatives than anything else. Nevertheless, I do think it could be consudered as a stop-gap measure.

Is he one of the top 5/6 batters in England? If so pick. If not leave out

Would love to see Bell back, if you're good enough you're young enough.

Bring back Colly next!

I think Bell needs to spend the summer scoring tons of runs. If he came back to the test side, would some of the baggage Bell had accumulated over the years stand in his way? Smith seems to be going for youth- but Adil Rashid, although relatively young as a spinner, was picked l. What I like about Ed Smith is he isn’t afraid to follow his gut instinct- Smith May already have made a decision on the likes of Bell- I for one wouldn’t rule him out just because of his age. Bell looks a fit guy and could carry on for a couple of years and therefore could play a part in some important series.
Personally I like a comeback story so would pick him if he continues to score runs (and the other candidates keep failing)There are still some other candidates out there, like Livingstone for example, who haven’t had an opportunity yet.

interesting comments Golders from Root yesterday, perhaps offering an olive branch to some of the older players ''the door is not closed to senior players'

maybe just a comment that does not mean too much but you never know

personally , if we are picking 15 for sri lanka and the windies I would have Bell in as one of the best 7 batsmen in the Country, and he plays spin as well as anyone

as far as selection goes, Smith has proved a bit unorthodox so far, who is to say he wont continue that way?

totally get backing younger players in the team, really pleased we are doing that.....but there is a balance and our top order has not been good enough for quite a while now..

most good teams have a balance in the batting of promising talent and experience

we see the Indian top order lacking quality in our conditions, if they had the choice would a more experienced player be picked in this current test series?

may never happen of course but as @Seniorplayer mentioned, Bell has got this form back this year and looks as good as ever to me

I do think he is genuinely hungry to prove something. Which has got to be a good thing.

The international calendar, particularly for England players, is a huge slog. I reckon Cook's suffering from burnout now, I suspect Bell had the same.

Players used to take time off, Gooch, Botham, Gower all did, probably prolonged their careers. Who's to say he doesn't still have the ability and that he's refreshed and hungry?

I agree with a lot of what you guys are saying. Look at his record, first class and test- the guy has scored a huge volume of runs over a long period. He has had a fairly long period out of the test side now- he has been through a tough time, has given up the captaincy I believe at Warwickshire, and may be rejuvenated- he shouldn’t be discarded completely. Plus he’s right handed, has the quality to bat 3 which Root would like.
Is Cook on borrowed time? For me the opening situation is still a major worry for me! Burns may get a go soon if for either Jennings or Cook. Could we not have a right handed Slater-Warner dasher up top with Roy? Has he opened in first class for Surrey?Id like him to- I want him in the side.

What do we think of this lineup with no Stoked?Cook
Roy
Bell
Root
Pope
Bairstow
Butler
Woakes
Curran
Rashid
Broad
Anderson
