Ian Bell recall?
« on: August 08, 2018, 12:57:44 PM »

has announced he want to play test cricket again

split opinion on this forum like Brexit when discussed previously

one of the most gifted players ive seen in an England shirt, the question is, is he now too old?

players from other Countries play on well into their mid 30's, why not for us?

think its time to look to the future to younger players. I highly doubt the selectors are even thinking about recalling him no matter how many runs he gets

Smith going for Curran and Pope alone probably puts Bell getting picked to one side. It’s clear Smith is looking well into the future and building a side for years to come, Bell would be an extremely short term fix.

Bell stopped playing international cricket far too soon and at a time when England desperately needed his experience and quality. If he had KP has continued to be selected the transition to younger guys like Pope would have far easier than the situation they now encounter with the top order a complete shambles.  I would love to see him back batting at 3 for a couple of years to allow the younger guys space to develop but I can't see it barring a number of injuries

If one of Cook/Root/bairstow or Buttler got injured Bell has a chance. England need experienced internationals to balance the team.

Worth noting also that Bell always has a great publicist.
He is also in wonderful form.

Should never have moved him from five or six where he had the best record by far. Never understood the english obsession with moving players from their most successful positions.

Could only see him returning in a very short term, i.e. rest of a single series, emergency. For what its worth, Chris Rogers and Voges did great short term jobs for Australia. Age is just a number.

We didn't pick Ramps for the 2006/7 ashes and he was averaging a hundred. Can't see Bell getting back in now...

hes so talented but knowone ever mentions him in conversations for selection. But then again who would have thought 2 weeks ago Rashid would be playing against India so you never know

exactly, never saw Rashid's recall coming, or playing a 20 year old in a crucial test batting 4 with about 18 months CC cricket behind him.

we are facing spin thru the winter too....Lankan wickets are going to turn square and windies now appear to be raging bunsens..... you never know with selection I suppose

Ramprakash did have plenty of chances though, was a big fan and think he was a little unlucky but you could see the pressure weighed heavily on him.

Bell should definitely be back in in my opinion.  Like others have said regarding Voges et al, you can't overstate the importance of experience and learned guile in Test cricket.

The difference between Bell and Ramps is that Bell has proven himself to be a top international batsman over a long period of time whereas Ramps proved over an equally long period of time that he wasn't up to the job at that level.  Sky are running an excellent documentary series looking at the mental side of the game and Ramps features heavily in it.  Whether or not he wasn't mentally strong enough to succeed at the top level, I think it was universally acknowledged by that stage of his career that he would never crack test cricket

True enough.  There must be some career County pros with high averages and solid technique that could possibly play international cricket late in their careers?
