Despite neither one meeting current regulations, I'm debating whether to get another Elite (plastic lid, very lightweight) or an Ultimate 98 (carbon fibre lid, better padding but heavier.)

The helmet was an S/S with steel grill although the bowler was trying to bounce me out every ball I don't blame the helmet or the bowler as I preferred to bat with a loose helmet chin strap.
The ball hit the grill in the mouth area and pushed the grill upwards and inwards into my face.

He must have been bowling, what, 80? 90? on a fast deck to buckle a steel grill like that. I've seen loads of batsmen grilled at 70-75mph and the helmet has never been damaged in the slightest. You must play a very high standard of cricket to face that kind of bowling. Are you pro?

No not a pro the bowler was a county player he told me his coaches had told him to bowl short and quick to try and nullify the scoring.

No wonder you only get 9 players in your team if you have county bowlers bowling bouncers at you!

I do fear that the new helmet regs will lead to club players either not wearing a helmet at all or continuing to wear old helmets that should have been replaced because of the restricted vision the new regs require

Helmet usage seems to have increased. A few years ago as a club we didn't even own a helmet and I didn't know anyone who regularly wore one. Nowadays there are maybe 2-3 batsmen on each side in helmets. Pretty much everyone wears one in nets now.

My helmet is 20 years old this year.

I'm assuming you mean 2 or 3 not in helmets?

Pretty much everyone in our league wears one - you get a few who ditch them against spinners, and the odd maverick who goes without entirely.

God no. 2 to 3 who wear a helmet. You simply don't need them at our level. Noone bowls above 75 and the pitches tend to be slow, so even if it hit you it wouldn't really hurt.

To each their own, I'll always wear one now. We only get the odd quick bowling 75+, but have seen many a mishap over the years.

Same, the fact that I have to go to work on a Monday and have a family to provide for is enough to make me wear one. If there is the equipment to reduce the severity of an injury either happening or occurring then I�d take it.

Having played thursday social cricket and been hit in the head without a helmet i can tell you even at that pace it still hurts and can do a lot of damage - i managed to top edge it into my face - luckily i had turned to square leg to see where it was going so it hit me just above the right eyebrow. dread to think what would have happened had it hit somewhere else.

I'm 38 and never had to wear a helmet through junior cricket but wear it all the time now - its a recent masuri so not adjustable grille - my only issue is that it tends to wobble about on my head when playing shots and running so i have to adjust it regularly.

The wobbliness of an old (but trusty) helmet is a nightmare. I use old masuri with adjustable grill. Newer helmets are either heavy or don't provide the kind of clear visibility that Masuri does.

Have to watch out for beamers, also rouge attempted run out throws.

If a helmet wobbles when running etc it�s not fitting you properly, seek new padding to get a snugger fit.
