Practicing Bat Making

I've made a couple of part mades and they have come out ok, but mostly with having to finish off with a sander!

I was thinking of going to to the local wood yard and getting some bat sized pieces of pine and practicing on them as a bit cheaper!

Just wondering if anyone else had done this?

Really good idea, pine is cheap and soft so you can practice. It is a very good way to learn.

You could try your council  local tip they usually have plenty of wood all types  for free as they only set fire to it.

Thanks gents, will get a few pieces, it's just getting used to the tools. I'm definitely getting better but easier to just go for it on a bit of pine, particularly with a draw knife as once you've taken it off that's it!

I found the drawknife relatively easy to use, but I shape my bats sat down
If you YouTube shave horses, you can see how the Americans use the drawknife
I find I’m a lot steadier, using it this way, and can remove material a lot easier.

I also use a travisher a lot,,probably too much, but I reckon I could shape a bat just using it,,it’s that versatile.
It’s surprising how little you need to make a bat

I reckon a bat made from Mahogany would be pretty cool.

As i'm a complete novice at this i've been thinking this is the way to go - grab some random bits of wood and see what shape i can get them into - mainly to get used to using the tools and i dont want to screw up a part made!!

Its pretty easy if the tools are sharp. Just take your time on some Partmades - contact a bat maker and ask for some damaged ones on the cheap. they will have some laying around.

Never thought of that - i'll ask the guy i'm getting them off if he has any laying about. Just itching to get started now but need to wait for kit to arrive etc.

Who are you getting them off if you don't mind me asking?  Can PM if that would be better.  Thinking of having a crack at this in the not too distant future.  May even have a blast at putting together a press, got a few things in mind which could work, but which equally could be hair-brained lunacy.

Or work on some old bats? Take a bit of weight off or re balance, re profile them
