Newbery guys
« on: August 30, 2018, 03:38:34 PM »

Had a chat with one of the lads from Newbery today.

He mentioned that the lads there are/were decent players so if you want to buy directly but are not able to visit them they can help you by going through what they have in stock. Maybe not news to most of you but nice to know.

I asked about the Keeley brothers leaving, the reply was that one chapter has closed but another one has opened. Now they're able to produce more bats (some in Derbyshire) while still keeping the quality high.

I asked about people on ebay buying bats on ebay that are stickered up as SPS grade when before the refurb they were players grade. The reply was it is one of their biggest bugbears but there's no much they can do about the high quality fake stickers available. Their policy (at least since this year) is to only keep stickers back for their own refurbs and not sell them directly to the public.

In all it was nice to see their passion for the game because I'd been led to believe recent changes had brought in new management who were more 'office' types. And it was odd to see Israel playing Guernsey (who they sponsor) in a WT20Q.

Forgot to mention I also asked them if they use Canadian/European or even Saberian willow. The answer was nope, only willow from JS Wrights.

More important though while 2017 wasn't so good, 2018 has been a great year for quality willow. Just in case you needed a reason to buy another bat of course.

The Newbury shop is headed up by Scott Kelsey who played for Dorking 1st. Now plays for RMU in Sussex Div 6 west soon to be div 5 West after smashing the leagueb with a former Eastbourne 1st teamer scoring +1,500 league runs with an average of 101 🤢.

There are lots of rumours of these players playing below their level for money. But can't be proved.

I recently saw a picture of a delivery of Legacy bats on Twitter that would definitely look like Hunts bats to those on here.

Players getting paid to play in Div 6 of Sussex League West? Very sad.

You get that in the north east as well, certain players playing well below their standard for easy money

I won’t claim to know a lot about the team but I notice Michael Gould’s name on the honours board far too often and when I checked his stats he averages 106 from 61 innings with 19 hundreds and a top score of 275*
I’d say that qualifies as playing below your level

He is a very good player. He struggled to get any 50's is Div 1. He is a nice guy too. Matt Machan the former Scottish T20 player was meant to play for them last year but the were a day late transfering him from Sussex ccc into their team. His brother George plays for them, average player..but used to play in Div 1 for findon.

It's a strange set up where their "chairman" does the toss, sits in his £120k land rover and smokes the Wacky Backy.

Michael is Ian Gould's son and has played Sussex 2's cricket.  I don't know the full in's and out's but I think he has played from RMU since it's inception. Lets hope for the club's sake he's not on performance related pay !!!!!

Not flogging off all your old stock of stickers would have been a good start TBH.
