I'm glad that everyone seems to be agreeing with my logic. I went with the one on the left, because of less heartwood. I very nearly went with right because the strip of heartwood is a straighter line, but decided that the grains were still gorgeous on the left and I didn't want so much heartwood.

Nope heartwood's great, no problems with that at all - just preferred the grains on the other one.

Don't know, I'm only getting the one on the left! Don't need two more!

Both of them look good, But for me I would trust the batmaker to choose the best - you have to trust the people who deal with clefts etc on a daily basis.

Thats why you pay good money to a good batmaker.

Just out curiosity why is it preferable to have it on the outside edge?

It' will help prevent edge damage as heartwood is harder.

But the ball is just as likely to hit the inside edge as the outside edge, no?

Know you're just repeating a common opinion, but Hardwood is drier and crack more easily in my experience.

Only if you've got an unusually balanced technique and face equal amounts of inswing and outswing, which is unlikely! I know I certainly take more damage on one edge than the other.

@Kulli both are right I think, heartwood is certainly harder (a good thing if you ask me), but also definitely drier and more brittle.

I don't think so. All the bats I have for repairs/refurbs of teammates tend to have more damage on one edge than the other (usually the inside one, if that says anything?)

Inside edge - playing across the line/slogger
Outside edge - not getting to the pitch of the ball

No idea of the truth of it but that's what I was always told.
