Laver and Wood Conqueror
« on: September 10, 2018, 08:54:02 PM »

So-- here is my second bat purchase during my comeback trail.

I have not had a LW in well over a decade. And I did not want to spend too much this time as I am just trying to get my bearings right after a prolonged time off from the game. So no Signature or Reserve was on the agenda. I had quite liked the Conqueror profile when TallPaul had reviewed it on his channel. But I hated the oversized stickers and was looking for a cheaper version than the Reserves he had in his kitty as these were being made in Hyderabad. Anyway, I got one shipped to me in the US for $269 (all inclusive) from NZ and had requested Ant to send me a bat with a softish pressing and some grains. As this was the Special Reserve, I really was not expecting much in terms of looks but was hoping that it will have the pop from get-go. Well, I got it in my hands and am seriously impressed. The pressing is quite softish and the bat has about 8 straightish grains. Considering the willow grade, the grains are surprisingly quite straight and nice. The blemishes are small as you can see. The retro stickers do not hide anything. The weight is a little over 2.9. The edges and profile look quite meaty. The response with an old ball and the good old mallet is quite impressive. Unlike the other ones, this does not say made in India and this was shipped directly from NZ. So I do not quite know who made them and I am not going to ask Ant about it. It also does not have the oversized sticker on the side which is a big plus as far as looks are concerned.

The handle looks a little thin but it's not a big problem. The pickup will improve with another grip.

It came with the nice LW green bat cover and the anti-scuff sheet applied. I would have preferred without the sheet to be honest.

Overall, I am very happy with LW as usual; more so this time as this was comparatively not that expensive. Good service. Good bat.

Here are some pictures. Please click on them to see bigger versions.

So Paul Young from LW wrote this to me and I am quoting him below. The above bat was handmade in NZ. Good to know.

Paul Young:
ALL bats purchased from us in NZ are 100% hand made by us. We do not carry any stock made elsewhere.
In our Indian shop, they carry both NZ made, and Indian made bats.
Its just cricket had stock from both NZ and India as a trial.

All Indian made Laver & Wood bats are only currently for the Indian market, and are currently not available anywhere else.

Even the custom orders from India are made here in NZ.

Hey man! It’s good to see that you are still here. Did your conqueror come from NZ or India?

Looks decent that!

I personally love the retro branding on this bat - i hate flashy stickers on bats these days - but then i am a traditionalist.

I'm sure this will serve you well!

Looks an absolute belter for the price, esp for an NZ made L&W.

Still has to be the green shield stickers for me mind you.

I think back in 2011-12 you had 2 signatures/reserves? I remember seeing the picture of one of them-- absolutely stunning. So now you just don't buy bats, you also sell them  :D. The best part of having a cricket store is to be able to play with these magnificent sticks- have them in your hands and bask in their glory.

Just the 1st one remains, had it refurbed by them a few years back and not used since. Might just dig it out now, see what it’s like

A quick update on this: few weeks back when I was going in for nets, I could not squeeze my way through to the batting crease. Every time I tried, something was blocking my advance. How did I become so fat? So suddenly? Well, I realized, that it is difficult to have a net when you are carrying a trampoline and not a bat. I have kept the bat in the backyard for the time being. My neighbor's kids use it to bounce up and down. The other day I spied a well oiled blonde trying it out. This bat is good and serves a lot of different purposes. Enuf said.

4 actually. James, Toby, Jack and Paul. Look on their Facebook for a post dated 24/9. Has a Padshavers and Quiltmakers lineage feel .
