so another fabulous player retires at the end of the year, since England converted to batting keepers those specialists like Read and Foster did not get much of a look in.

I saw Read keep at Lords in an MCC v ROW game and just marvelled and how good he was, and although I have only kept a few times in club cricket, once memorably for Arundel CC when the normal keeper turned up drunk(no byes that day for me) what struck me was how clean.tidy and immaculate everything was, simply no fuss anywhere, and Ajmal played that day(and made Pieterson look like an amateur)

I did speak to a guy once on tour in Cheltenham who said 'im happy to tak to you about who is the best keeper around but ive seen Jack Russell stand up to Courtney Walsh in an exhibition match'

which sort of killed the conversation from my point of view.

who has been the best in recent times? I think having seen Read live, he would be my choice....

Standing up to the stumps Foster is one of if not the best wicket keeper, shame is batting wasn�t half as good as his keeping other wise would have played 100 games for England

I saw him in the England dressing room at the Oval when Cook got his ton, he was in his Essex gear. I wonder if he was there just to see and enjoy his mates final test match.

A top class keeper and one which should have been used way more by the ECB

A truely wonderful keeper..... and i wonder if the last of the dieing breed of actual traditional keepers is retiring.

As has been said if only his batting was up to it a bit more he would have played a lot more for England.

if you look at Ben Foakes, who is about the best young keeper in the Country, and then think his is a very good batsman also..then think would he actually play in a modern day test side ahead of a bairstow or butler who are batsmen first....

that's probably how difficult it is now for a keeper first-batsman second..to actually play in a test match.

there might be different thinking is say we were touring sri lanka or india and the selectors were looking at more of a specialist keeper as they would be stood up a lot

but they didn't do that last time we toured India from memory

The thing I dislike about so much talk about the batting averages is that it ignores the impact that a genuinely good keeper has on a game. Great keepers don't just drop fewer catches, miss fewer stumpings and allow fewer byes but they create dismissals out of nothing. Keepers nowadays are basically good point or cover fielders with gloves on and yeah they might average 15 runs more but I'm not sure that's worth the chances you lose by not having a top class gloveman. A keeper with great range can save you a slip fielder, giving the bowler and captain an extra fielder elsewhere. Gloucs became a force in one day cricket thanks in large part to Jack Russell standing up to the medium pacers.

This England side, by virtue of all these all-rounders, is in a great position to play someone based primarily on their keeping ability because they have guys with first class centuries coming in at 9 or 10. Imagine a batsman trying to counter Anderson swinging the Dukes ball next summer by standing outside his crease only to have the keeper counter that by coming up to the stumps. A top class keeper can change games in the field.

absolutely spot on, could not agree more. Ever played a club match with a class keeper who stops you standing out side the crease or worried about getting forward and overbalancing? its a different game

sadly I think the game has moved on permanently.....

I suspect Foakes will go to sri lanka but not play a game.its a shame really. what you gain in one hand you lose in another

Saw him get a 50 @ Melbourne 2003,i believe,so not too bad a player..

Loved him more as i managed to get a load of Kit off him around 1999/2000,via a mate who was seeing his sister,a GN Millenium aptly enough,plus pads and gloves,all of which far too good for me,so all got stuck in a wardrobe until 2 years ago when i asked whether a players grade could be refurbished after 20 odd years at the GN stand at the Lords test....they said yes,so i popped down to Robertsbridge and got it sorted !.....it then went and got 4/5 half centuries in the Home Counties League(via my mate who`s decent..) before disintegrating,so quality will always out !

No, he was there working with Bairstow, who stood up to Anderson and Broad on Tuesday.

Foster's batting improved massively in the second half of career.

Have sat with his parents at Chelmsford. Very posh!

I don't think Russell standing up to Courtney Walsh in a exhibition match proves he was the greatest keeper. I'm pretty sure I've seen Malcolm Marshall bowl with the keeper up in a championship game. Bobby Parks, I think.

Ben Foakes is very good. There is an argument that keeping will become more of a specialist position going forward.

Having said that, I think Russell was the best I've seen. I'd probably rate second to him.

Of those 6 dismissals, i can see a lot of batsmen first , keeper second types missing out on some /any of the first 5 . That's class .

A real keeper makes a massive difference - Matt Prior and YJB both worked on their keeping to the extent that they became good, but there are three or four levels on from that. You may have seen elsewhere I said that I'd take Foakes to Sri Lanka - I stand by that, because I think there is a lot to be said for a specialist in many situations.

How good was Foster? Of keepers I've seen in my 33 years watching the game, I'd place him joint second with Jack Russell behind Ian Healy.

Chris Read one of my favourite players in last 20 years. Love watching a top keeper. Agree that a good keeper can change a game.

Foakes will not go, Buttler will be back up keeper. I think Buttler is better keeper than Bairstow ..... but rather have a proper keeper than either.

For me he is 2nd behind Russell (who was my hero growing up as a keeper). But I never got to see Knott and Taylor who a lot of people rate very very highly.
