Sandpaper

Hi guys hopefully you can help, need to sand down a few bats but not quite sure we’re to get sandpaper that doesn’t damage your bat. Made the rookie mistake of buying some from b & q and that didn’t work. I’ve previous bought GM bat care bundle. But as I’m only after the sandpaper was hoping someone would know were to pick some up.

120 then 240 grit. Nothing wrong with sandpaper from b&q. Though I would buy a 10m roll from toolstation for about £4.

120 grit is coarser so start with that before moving up to 240.
 I use 400 too to get a smoother finish before adding bat wax. I 've used a detail sander with cheap sanding sheets from Toolstation with no problem.

Is the stuff off amazon and Ebay any good. There doesn’t seem to be any toolstation or screwfix near me and they delivery charges are more than the item. Thanks for your help guys

It should be but wouldnt touch  the really cheap stuff brought some from the £ shop it was made in China and it disintegrated as soon as i started sanding.

Had stuff off eBay which has been fine. Any general sandpaper should be fine really, just go through the grits but don't start too low.

Yes. I may go down to 80 grit  if it is in very bad condition . Some people go to some finer grades than 240 but to be honest there is no need to if you allow enough time with each grade of paper.
The number denotes the number of pieces per square inch. So 120 grit has 120 bits of aluminium oxide (or similar) per square inch.

Yep, start with 120 and sand until cleaned up. Try to be even all over and then go over again with 240 in the same fashion. I'd tape over the edge of stickers if you're not removing those
 I also use 400 grit to finish it off.

Or if you want a super smooth gleaming bat purchase a specialist finishing paper.

I have used 600 before to get a really smooth finish but 400 works fine.

Dont sand accross the grain, youll leave deep marks/cuts that will be hard to sand out.
There are different types of paper, they have different abrasive material eg aluminium oxide, garnet, carbide. The white aluminium oxide stuff has sterate in it to lubricate and stop it getting clogged good for paint, also good for wood. The carbide stuff is good as it has a very uniform particle/abrasive size(vs others which are a bit of a mix of sizes) this makes the transition from course to smooth papers better as you dont have to sand as much to get the deeper marks from the larger particles out. Ive found some carbide papers leave black marks on wood tho. I wouldnt use garnet, usually its very course.
What you use to hold the paper is important, sanding block, sander, tennis ball for back of bat. Random orbital is good for front face.
