If youre taking off stickers or scuff sheet the glue residue doesnt sand off well, youll need some solvent to get it off first (white spirit, linseed oil, citrus dissolve sticky stuff)

What number sand paper is recommended for the toe? minor crack that’s needs sorting out

Depends, i use bench belt sander which is 120 i think. Can go 80 if you want to shape it a bit. Pros on grass seem to leave it rough, possibly makes it less likely to split if youre playing on dry good wickets. If youre going for shop finish then 80->120->240. If your putting on toe gaurd then 120 good to help adhesion

Usually start sanding toe cracks with rough down to smooth sandpaper unless applying toe guard  then leave toe a little rough

Make sure you remove all the particles between grades,(I have a stiff brush)
If your going to polish a bat, I would say go 240,300,400 with grits,,, your not gonna polish out sanding marks and achieve a decent finish,,, the bat has to be mark free first,, I find bright sunshine the best light to see the marks
Use a random orbital carefully, if you can fit a vacuum to it even better,,, buy a mixed pack of discs off amazon

Process,,, as I wrote above
Go through the sandpaper grades, 80,120,150,220,300,400,600
Might miss a couple depending on how it looks
Remove all the dust before starting a new grade,(stiff brush)
Then buff it
Job done,,,, hopefully I made that sound a lot easier than it actually is

Done correctly each higher grade of sand paper will remove the marks of the previous grade.
