This season was bit too much for me in terms of injuries. Once the back was sorted out, the index finger got dislocated while making a stupid attempt at a simple looking catch.

No obvious fracture on initial X-ray but the finger is still sore and not able to flex it completely. Any experience with healing time assuming regular physio & rest?

As you mention an X-ray I assume you've actually been to hospital and had it put back properly?

I dislocated one of my fingers in July last year, and popped it back in myself to carry on playing. In hindsight, I should have gone to get it done properly as it still isn't right to this day! It clicks when it moves and I've never regained the full range of movement.

If you had it put back in hospital then I'd expect it to be sore for a few weeks (yes, really!) but if you do as you're told physio and rest wise it should be as good as new.

Thanks for the reply. I reduced the dislocation or realigned it myself almost immediately while on the field, and then went in for the X ray ( the docs were happy that I made their job bit easier).

It is my dominant hand's index finger and I was bit more concerned than usual...

I dislocated my middle finger a few years ago. Like you I snapped it back in straight away and had it x-rayed at a walk in centre, with no obvious break found.

A month later I was still in a lot of pain and couldn�t bend it, so decided to get a second opinion. Got a referral from my GP to see an orthopaedic specialist, had another X-ray to find when the dislocation occurred a sliver of bone had been pulled away with the ligament.

After physio exercises and months in a splint, pain went and got somewhere close to full movement back. Still can�t quite extend it fully, but functions okay...not sure whether the delay in treatment impacted on the recovery.

I have done this, it will take a while to get better, but you have most of the off season for it to recover.
Possibly six to eight weeks if you are a slow healer. Having said that you could probably play through it if you had a weeks rest.

It happen to me playing football went to tackle and the guy booted the ball which hit the tip of my index finger pushing it inwards couldn't feel a thing from the knuckle to the tip of the finger for over a month sensation slowly returned but my finger from the knuckle to the tip as stayed bent.

These splints are pretty good:

You can bend them to adjust the position, I have a fingertip still a bit "off-centre" thanks to one of the plastic ones that kept rotating.

Keep sleeping with it for a few weeks after you feel that it's better.

I had something like this which I�d use for 20min every couple of hours to extend and strengthen the joint when not using the splint.

i think i did something similar towards the end of the season felt the top part of the finger bend all the way back and instinct kicked in and i pulled it back in. Was very painful for a week or so and just wore those double elasticated finger bandage thing for a week or two - occasionally hurts like hell if i put too much pressure on though.
