I think his wife's illness has taken a lot out of him (as it would with any family) and at the same time he has maybe come to realise what's important to him in terms of his life and how he wants to spend the rest of it.

I think he's done a lot to shake up the ODI system to enable it to become one of the best teams in the world, thanks in part by keeping Morgan on.

I wish him all the best going forward

I hope for him and his families sake his wife's condition hasnt deteriorated. All the best to him and his family, its a brave decision to make but family is much more important

Glad to see the back of him.  The ECB's David Brent, capable of talking whilst saying nothing.  His presence in Australia last winter was utterly counterproductive.  It would be good to see the ECB able to attract a former player of genuine substance to the roll but with the pay and relative stress-free environment of a post-playing career in the media, it is clear to see why a non-entity like Strauss ended up in the roll

Almost impossible to hold down a job of that magnitude whilst being needed as a husband and father when your wife is unwell. Think his legacy is the changes to our white ball in as has already been said making us one of the strongest white ball sides in the world and not just at home.
However test cricket has gone backwards so that has to be the focus of his replacement. Would like to se someone like Nasser take over as a heart on the sleeve kinda of bloke who loves cricket and I don’t tho I would be a corporate yes man

that's a harsh and unfair view of Strauss.Our test cricket has gone backwards true, but white ball cricket has improved massively, how much directly down to him is hard to say

On a personal level, I hope that things go well for him at what is clearly a challenging time.  On a cricketing level, I can only say thank your deities - Strauss has been nothing short of a disgrace in his management of the English game.  Yes, there have been improvements to the one day side, but our Test cricket has gone sharply down hill, and his almost complete devaluation of the county game has led to major gaps in the talent coming through.

Unless Michael Atherton can be convinced to give up journalism, which I doubt, then I would go outside cricket - get a proven sports administrator who can look dispassionately at things.

Agree entirely. We have this obsession in cricket of either appointing a) ex-international cricketers who have no coaching experience or qualifications, and certainly no business acumen,  or b) dodgy rich Del-Boy like chancer figures like Colin Graves who have enormous egos and massively overestimate their own competence, and c) slippery corporate types like Tom Harrison who serve multiple masters and only appear to be interested in whatever policy they think will boost their personal remuneration packages.

We never seem to even consider appointing someone with actual proven experience or ability in successfully administrating a major sports league or national team. Even if you look at the county chairmen, most fall into one of the above three categories.


As for this particular position, my recommendation is: don't replace him. We don't need a "Director of English Cricket", its a nonsense position. We have a head selector and a head coach to take charge of our national teams. Both of whom should be directly answerable to the board.

It doesn't matter who they appoint, everyone will still say they're terrible and shouldn't have got the job.

It's just one of those poison jobs where you could be the best person ever at the job, but the players aren't up to it and you get killed. Strauss may well have set up player pathways in the background and in 10 years time we'll be unstoppable. His job isn't purely judged on the results of the men's senior team. He's also in charge of the Disability teams, U19's, Women's game and countless other tasks.

I for one wish him well, hope his wife's condition is improving and hope one day he will return in some capacity to the ECB.

Whoever is appointed, we'll be having this conversation again when they step down....

However, good riddens from a cricket view. Test cricket is in a dismal state as is red ball in general. Participation dropping still with zero sign of it rising any time soon... still, he said yes to the ECB lots and didn’t rock the boat.. pretty much what the next guy/gal will be like

It’s not really his fault but he’s not done anything to suggest he saw anything wrong.. a few pathways etc isn’t what’s needed

Indeed, hope & sympathy for the family involved. But certainly the demise of Test cricket  & the red ball seems inevitable globally...I have not played with a single red ball in the last 3 years of active club cricket :(
