Compton retires.
« on: October 04, 2018, 10:04:11 PM »

So just seen on his Instagram that nick Compton has retired from cricket. Anyone else feel like he was a bit unlucky to have only played 16 tests? Bloke scored 2 hundreds in 16 tests - much more than can be said about most of the team?

Wasn't he as good as retired during the 2018 season anyway?

As far as his Test career went, I think there may have been a clash of personalities that didn't help his cause, but that's just speculation.

Yes very much so, previously when mentioned thou I've had to have a tin hat on the forum!!  :)

Not quite good enough in the end but should of had more chances, we may, I say may, be saying the same about Malan and Vince in years to come.

Three things for me, and let's be clear I'm not saying he was a world beater..

Very opinionated, telling Gooch he 'didn't understand his batting' maybe not great thinking, but shows he had his own mind and not a clone.

Two....Bayliss wanted aggressive number 3 like the Aussies (!)...Compton did not fit this bill so was not really long term under Bayliff

And three.....Compton and cook very steady...would he of benefitted thou from having a strokeplayer batting with him and been more successful? We won't know the answer...

And forth.....obsession with technique got him in the end, clouded the mind...we all practice technique, or most of us I would think...when it becomes your master it hinders batting, he got tied up in knots and his intense personality didn't help him...

Just my thoughts  :)

I liked Compton, I liked the way he batted, proper opener. Possibly unlucky not to get more Tests and then not helped by a crisis of form and confidence... it's very much a mental game as we know. His efforts alongside Cook now look pretty decent given the challenges England have had and continue to have with openers. I can see him doing more summarising and media work, being easy on the eye and being a decent communicator. Good luck to him.

Always liked Compton proper test opener and  type of opener England currently need but it seems like if your not a special player  your personality has

to fit into England teams  otherwise as soon as your form dips you are out.

England team has had a lot of issues

We had had bullying by the two most successful bowlers the destruction of the best batsman England had produced or Peterson
Although he wasn't completely innocent

But then again they have been really good to Moeen...

I thought the dressing room problems were a known issue? Like Carberry he was always seen as in the "KP Camp", rather than the Cook, Anderson, Broad camp". There was a whispering campaign from within the ECB against Compton from the get-go (like there was against Rashid, who the ECB briefed the press was "mentally weak"). Compton always got slaughtered in the press for every innings that wasn't a run-a-ball double ton, whilst other batsmen with worse records got a far easier ride. Its like they actively wanted him to fail.

This (No Swearing Please) about wanting two of the top 3 to be fast scorers was so stupid it couldn't have possibly been true. This is test cricket ffs, weight of runs is what matters.

I'm not sure that Compton was true test quality - but he was a damn sight better than any of the other muppets with obvious technical problems that we've tried. Its absolutely shocking that he was drummed out of the team simply because his face didn't fit.

Compton is a big admirer of Pieterson, as was Bell,Carberry and Tremlett....and others.

there are player thru history who has been perceived as 'difficult' one of the reasons Nasser is so respected is because the day after we lost to New Zealand and he was booed by the crowd, he and Fletcher changed selection to include the talented but difficult and it was up to them to manage them.

Hussein, of course, was a hot headed selfish player in is youth by his own admission, and never destined to be Captain, the fact is he was a very good one in a time we were not a great team.Thorpe, caddick, gough all performed for him to drag us off the bottom.

I don't actually buy this rhetoric about England being useless in the 90s. I remember the era well, and we had a lot of talented players, and actually had a very good record at home through the decade.

The period from 1987 to 1993, England were pretty bad, with decent batting let down by an endless array of utterly incompetent bowlers, and lost to pretty much everyone with just a creditable draw against West Indies in 1991, but from 1994 to 1998 we were consistently competitive against some excellent sides, thanks mainly to a much improved seam attack, with Gough, Caddick, Cork, Fraser, Headley all coming through in this era. 1999 was a very disappointing blip, but things hardly got much better in the early 2000s - we became harder to beat away from home, but were stuffed in 2001 at home by the Aussies, and then failed to beat India in 2002 or South Africa in 2003. So actually, this idea that 90s England terrible, 2000s England great, is not quite right. Both eras were "inconsistent".

We need to remember the incredible quality of the opposition at this point. West Indies were still a terrifying prospect, Australia were already on their way to being one of the all-time great teams by 1993, and South Africa and Pakistan were also serious prospects. Australia and Pakistan were the only teams to beat us at home between 1990 and 1998.

I totally agree that the England team of the 90's wasn't that bad. Thorpe, Hussain, Atherton, Caddick and Gough weren't too shabby! I always felt we competed against what was far stronger opposition than we have to play against today.

Seems to me Compton lad was actually a good lad

And got a very tough ride

Hussain just comes accross as an obnoxious loser.

Atherton is one hell of a guy and man
