I'd say he has a place in the squads as a minimum!

Can't think of many other notable players around right now that will be affected by this?

Wood is arguably worst than Dernbach and Sam Curran is probably the same quality as Willey with the ball, Curran superior batsman. Stone only one could be aggrieved if he missed out for Archer tbh

I'm sure I'll be really happy to see him taking loads of wickets for England but it does make me a bit sad for the state of world cricket when I see all these South Africans, West Indians and Irish players turning out for England against the countries that they probably grew up supporting.

Wood I agree is very hit and miss but Willey has a lot of credit with England. Stone would definitely have cause to grumble as this is the role that he was brought in for.

Indeed.i don't quite get how the rules have been changed now when previously they could not be- Archer can choose to play for who he wishes to having an English Father and presumably a West Indian mother.

However, I hope the ECB compensates the WI cricket board to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars as all we are doing is bleeding other nations of their players and making them weaker.

When India, Australia and England cut up the financial pie for the future they did it not caring if the other test playing nations went to hell in a hand cart.

Archer can play for whichever Country he wants to, but we need to compensate West Indies, he came thru their system not ours.

As far as I can recall Archer was dropped from the Barbados set up after injury problems. He holds a British passport so came to play club cricket in England from where he was picked up by Sussex.

I can see in cases it genuine poaching of players there may be an argument for compensation - although the other side of the coin is the argument that the player who holds dual nationality should be able to pick which country they want to represent. However, this is a case where the player was rejected by the country he lived in so I can't see any argument at all for compensation from a country that gave him a route back into the professional game

Archer wasn't good enough to get in the WI U19 squad when he started playing cricket in England, quite arguable that a lot of his major development happened in England surely?

Don't see it that way at all to be honest but everyone has a valid viewpoint on the forum and it's all be better for it.

I don't think myself the fact he missed selection at national level at some point in his early career is reason to say his major development was here.

England have seen the potential but how much credit we can take it very arguable. It's minimal in my view.

West Indies cricket is in a dire state, players with dual nationality will make their choice a lot of the time based on money..nothing wrong it's a professional sport, but should there be any compensation for the system that develops these players in other Countries?

It's a question that will bring different views.

Alternatively all the best players come to England and qualify and in ten years the only test matches are us v India v Australia?

Happy with that?

He�s just another in a long line - Small, Malcolm, Lamb, Hick, Lewis, Smith etc.

However, surely The Windies loss is our gain - he�s hardly been poached. Get him in the system and see how he goes, for every Robin Smith there is a Graeme Hick- he can sink or swim by his own talent.

Agree here, Willey consistently takes very early wickets which is priceless these days.

Re. 'Archer should be playing for the West Indies' - he's got a British father and has held a British passport since birth (or so I've read), so surely he can count himself a little unlucky that he has to go through a qualifying period at all?

Tbh I don't care whether Archer plays for England or Windies, but if rather his talent be seen on the world stage with England rather than wasted in T20 leagues like the majority of Windies best players

This post got me thinking how many in the long line ( born abroad ) have captained England can count 18 but probably more.

Personally as an England cricket fan and overall a fan of cricket as a whole its great to have him available to play for England, as i think he could become as valuable to England as Stokes with his all rounder qualities. Add into the mix the way Sam Curran has started his test career and England are starting to produce some of the best allrounders in world cricket and I personally am a fan of having players that have more than 1 string to there bow.

Looking at the way Australia destroyed us away in the last Ashes series its good to see a bowler that has been able to bowl 90mph plus for a couple of seasons without breaking down and thats what we need in some away series and we also have Ollie stone who is also gas by all accounts. This is good to see with out current opening bowling pair coming into the last spells of what have been amazing careers the future isn�t looking as bleak as it looked 12 months or so ago.
