Whats is that stain? On a new custom bat!
« on: December 30, 2018, 12:59:10 AM »

Hi everyone
So a friend got a custom made bat from someone. It has clean face but on the back is this stain which does not seem like heartwood or may be it is.
It has crazy ping and was bought based on performance but now we are curious about the stain.

Personally I think it either looks like a bit of a butterfly stain or some for of disfigurement caused by a branch growing in the part of the timber used to make your cleft.

It certainly won't "sand out".

What matters is that the bat is a pinger

Looks as if the cleft came from some insect/disease infected tree.

But, if the pick and balance feels good in hands then that’s all what matters.

“Ping”, IMO, is an over-rated character of the timer that seems to get over emphasized, and gets an over killed discussion.

Almost all bats ping good. There could be a minor difference here n there and few very rare and exceptional cases of dead ping bats - but - all what matters is, how does the bat’s pick and balance feel in your hand?

Well tbh, pick up and balance becomes irrelevant if the bat itself is a plank. Ping is sort of basic performance criteria when you pick up a bat from a shelf as there is nothing else that you can check to have a rough estimate on how the bat would perform.
Pick up and balance is very important but you can not determine performance based on these two.

Many would say ping matters first

Oh, believe me you have no idea... A former sponsor of this forum once made me a bat that he got to use in a net. He was so embarrassed by the lack of "ping", he took the bat back and made me a new one.

Unfortunately, he made rather a lot that had similar characteristics and ended up going out of business.

Most likely heartwood. Why do u care if it works OK? If anything, it may add to the strength of the bat.

Not that I disagree with your points but look at the other side from the manufacture's point of view.

Say SS TON.
They produce thousands of bat every month. Almost all in same shape and profile.
Before the stickers being put on, do we think they tap each and every bat to test the ping and put a high or low value price tag on it (at the ping tester's discretion)?
