Morrant Odi 50?
« on: March 01, 2019, 02:43:09 PM »

Does anyone have any recent experience with Morrant Odi 50 Destroyer bats? I can't find any reviews on line or comments from people. I've just received a second hand one that looks quite nice. Big sized bat that picks up well for its weight (haven't weighed it yet). Haven't decided whether to use it or sell on... Will post pics when it's cleaned up

Bat has come up really nicely after a gentle sand, oil and regrip.

It is a real beast at 3lb 3oz, long blade, big spine. Despite the weight I'm really tempted to use this bat.

Anyone got any good /bad experience of recent Morrant bats?

This one has current rrp £220 before the usual discounts, so it is meant to be fairly high end.

I know this post can't compete with the excitement of CA's latest antics, or the Sean Ervine pro - bats being sold off on Ebay :), but any
comments welcome...

I have used morrants other in house brand DUKES. It was a low grade 6 grain Patriot county pro bat but it was a gun.  I still miss that bat and sadly dukes have discontinued patriot range.
I have been interested in there new range. Thanks for reviewing it. Might go for it.

that is a proper 'railway sleeper' to coin an old phrase, has come up really nicely @Psi - great work!!! does anyone know who makes these? they sort of look a bit Hunts like, but not sure where Morrant sources bats from

i had an older Morrant bat for a while (when they used the blue and red stickers) brought off ebay about 2008 ish?? - it did a solid job, it was lightweight (the opposite end of the spectrum to this one :) ) and decently responsive for the weight and shape, was very durable too - i think i batted about 100 times with it and after a quick refurb it looked just as good as the day i got it  - good luck with the ODI 50!!!

I couldn't believe that bat was 3lb 3oz.

Either my bats pick up heavy or that ODI picked up several oz (like at least 4oz) lighter than its deadweight.

Yes it does pick up lightly and has a really good middle. But after 10 mins in the nets I could really feel the extra weight.

So, sadly I think I will have to sell it. Probably not the thing for a 50 year old who has not really played for last 30 years!

Anyone have an opinion on whether nets training with a very heavy bat is good or bad for technique? I heard it can ruin your timing of the ball...

Based on my experience, there is no benefit in using a heavy bat in the nets. The purpose of "nets" is to develop muscle for all your batting movements. If you think a heavy bat will somehow make you a strong hitter of a ball, it probably will not work unless you club 1000s of balls pre session. If you want to get stronger as a hitter, hit the gym and lift weights.

For nets, I use a bat that weighs the same as my match bat and has the same shape. Sometimes, I'd even use my match bat if I have been practicing with a different shape bat.

Regarding weight and age (related strength and endurance), try out different bat weights and shapes before settling on your ideal weight and shape. Light bats are useless for me but that's just my preference. Your situation could be different. Also, a beefed up middle of a light weight bat might pick up differently and could change your batting experience as well. I would avoid custom bat(s) unless you know a shape that works like gangbusters for you. If not, experiment with as many off-the-shelf shapes as possible and find one that helps hit a ball cleanly without much effort (magic of timing). Have you tried Newbery Blitz shape? You can generate a lot of bat speed with that shape, it is beautiful!

Good luck. :)

Thanks. Yes, I have two bats that I normally use in the nets :the first is my planned match bat:a Mrf Kohli Grand edition that I got for Christmas (lucky me) that I only use on real leather balls, and a similar shaped cheap copy of the Joe Root NB Tc1260, which I use with the ball machine. Not yet sure whether the Asian style bats will be ideal for me, but I'm going to try it out. They both feel pretty decent.
