Just a crazy thought last night but has anyone considered the aerodynamics of their bat shapes?
Ie. how the bat shape relates to the movement as it's swung through the air? As in a planes wings etc.
Lot of talk of thicker edges and middles and so on, but could a bats aerodynamics affect how it plays?
Could be a marketing strategy at the very least

I doubt it would make any difference at all, or the difference would be so minute it wouldn't be possible to calculate it.

Wasn't there a bat with holes drilled in it to 'improve' aerodynamics?

Weight placement has far more impact on swing speed. As for aerodynamics, I stopped throwing my bats at change room walls ages ago.

You're right about this @DorsetDan , but we could extend the discussion a little. There's nothing in Law 5 prohibiting a narrower face, it just can't be wider than 108mm. Imagine a bat with a narrower front face, maybe 68mm, which tapered out to 108mm at the back of the edges. This would be more aerodynamic, and would also create some odd results when playing shots. I guess it could simply result in more going to slip, but in T/20 particularly the 'not-knowing' might benefit the batsman, at least for a while. Might be worth an innovative test, just to see what happens.

I'd like to see double faced bats revisited if we are talking about innovative shots and keeping the field guessing. I doubt the benefits outweigh the negatives but it would be great to see the players of today being let loose with the extra shots available

Is it not easier just to use the back of a regular bat, I've done it on occasion when getting down while trying to sweep.

I guess that a few companies have experimented with narrowing the shoulders of the bat which must make the bat more aerodynamic although I imagine the improvement is very marginal

Unlikely, a bat moves in a roughly circular arc, so the greatest speed will be at the toe of the bat, reducing as you go up the bat towards the centre of the swing curve.
