Unbranded eBay Bats
« on: March 20, 2019, 08:37:58 PM »

I’m at the stage of trying to practise more of the bat making skills, but I’m trying to do it without wasting lots of money buying good quality clefts from forum sponsors. Whilst browsing eBay I stumbled across a listing for an unbranded English willow bay:
https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F303085550466

I had the thought that buying the heaviest weight (and therefore potentially largest profile) offering might give a more cost-effective (£40 delivered) option on which to practise.

Has anyone had a look at any of these sorts of bats? How bad are they?! I’m aware that pressing might not be great and they wouldn’t give the best performance, but for a bat that might not even be used, surely they can’t be too awful...?!

I don't know about that particular seller, but MSR is a good option for this.
They sell a load of bats very cheap, and will likely do a bulk buy discount.

As for pressing and performance, you've hit the nail on the head. If you likely won't use it, who cares! Just think of bats like this as a way of practicing with your tools, and if they play well once done it's an added bonus!

Is that through the MSR site? I’m wary of the MSR/CEAT/Nike/Reebok bats that come up on eBay!

They do list a lot of their bats on eBay, where I think the prices may be lower.

Are you sure you’re not confusing MSR with MRF?

All the MSR bats on eBay are sold directly by MSR.  Pakistan made I believe but based in UK (Stoke).

This is replying to @LukeFramBurton btw , not @WalkingWicket37 !👍

MSR ones look a decent price if you find one you like, I've seen a few in action and although not the nicest peices of willow to look at, they perform well

The grading on that first one you posted is rather generous. Apparent grade 1 bats, they look more grade 3 to me at a push

Yep! Exactly what I was doing. Too many initials being thrown around!

On the detailed listing they are grade 3, but tested for grade 1 performance. I’m not sure if they provide the pinch of salt required or if you provide your own.

I have a couple of unbranded ones as wet weather net bats and they are firm to say the least. However , if you are not planning on using them, they are excellent value for money.

Luke  as an option  have you considered  getting cheaper butterfly clefts.

You can practice on any old beat up bat.

Something that I have considered - I’ve just been a bit lazy getting in contact with local bat makers.

You can practice on any old beat up bat.
I’ve done some simple re-shapes but I thought that getting a larger profile bat would give me something more to play around with.
