My 2019 Surridge kit including SS turbo
« on: March 28, 2019, 03:56:42 PM »

Hi all.

So thought now i have all my Surridge kit i would share with you my thoughts and details of the kit. Firstly @Surridge Sports was very easy to deal with and was happy to share images and answer questions etc so initial impressions are a very easy company to deal with. I had wanted to use Surridge kit ever since they released some Purple/white softs a few years ago and we played against a lad from Middlesex academy who was using it and it just looked to me really classy and the bat sounded so good. I think i tried contacting Surridge then (must have been 4/5 seasons ago but got nothing in reply) certainly different now.

So onto the kit.
Bag - So i have gone for the Surridge Jumbo wheelie bag, being a keeper/batsmen i have found that whilst duffles are arguably more practical i do struggle to fit match kit in MST duffles i have used with the exception of the GM Original Duffle, however with this years model at almost £100 i opted for this at £60. Its MASSIVE, simple design with a large main compartment, 2 large side pockets on one side, full length pocket on the other and pockets at each end, one being perfect for valuables. Two pull options with padded handles. Only addition i would have liked would have been a padded bat tunnel either on the side or in the base.

Pads -   So these are the sample pads for the 2019 season that i was lucky enough to be able to get early. Now for the money I think these will take some beating if you want a plain white go with anything pad with all the bells and whistles. Leather instep, padded straps, leather and stitched top hat with embossed logo on the straps and front & side of the pads. Fit wise these are a youth size and with me being 5ft 7 these fit perfectly. Pads also come in a nice mesh bag as well.

Gloves - these are the 2018 season gloves and for me are my preferred sausage finger style gloves, pittards pads and treble piece thumb, Again these are youth size but even then are a tad big for me which for me is a 1srt with a youth glove. The gloves have some kind of comfort lining which for a glove at this price point i think is superb. These were £40 for a English pittard glove which compared to other main stream brands is again very good value in my opinion.

Bats - So my new addition is this G2 Surridge Turbo offering. Now i was sceptical about this purchase as I wasn’t sure what to expect in terms of profiles and shape but i took a punt after @Surridge Sports assured me how good his one was and also how impressed i have been initially with my Curve.
So this one is 2.10 and in my opinion a good looking G2, a couple of small pin knots but 7 straight grains, same through the back of the blade, 34/35MM edges only measured with a ruler. I would say its a mid placed profile and pick up is ok without being exceptional. Super full profile, not quite convex but very little in way ov concaving. I can’t say its 2.10 and feels 2.7 for example. I think a play around with the grip set up may help this. I wasn’t old enough to be ale to compare share wise with the original SS Turbo as used by Gooch so anyone that is please feel free to comment. Initial tapping up of the bat however is very very good. I was very impressed with the Curve i boiugh a few weeks ago and this I have no doubt will be just as good.

Surridge Curve - I have shared a review of this in the bats section but to include again this is 2.7 before adding a double thick chevron has taken this to 2.9 including the hammer scuff sheet. Actually at the moment prefer this shape with the duck bill toe and its slightly larger even though its lighter and is also G3. This has had a gentle net prior to adding this scuff sheet and performance is excellent. Will get a full net this weekend as had a little more prep over the week against a bola machine.

Overall super impressed and along with my GN, GM and now this i am well stocked for the season. Couple more net sessions to decide 2019 match kit. Here are some pics

changed the tophat to a more traditional style, scrapped the quilting on the inside of the tophat, removed the poor attempt at a gel zone in the knee locator, changed the buckle pads to PU instead of mesh etc

there is some pictures of the new ones on the blade II thread on our section

Apologies I see now, what were the reasons for the changes just out of curiosity?

the factory hadn't quite got what i was trying to get out of the pad and so i decided that the cleaned traditional look would be better than trying to hard and not getting a good looking product

Apologies I see now, what were the reasons for the changes just out of curiosity?

Both bats are quality willow, only thinking why you take 1 at 2.10lb and the other 2.7lb?
they both look to be very meaty

The 2.7 is now 2.9 with its grip set up and to be honest I’m not bothered by a 3oz weight diff as once i decide which bat to use for a a season I stay with it all season. Others just get the odd net time

Got that, does this mean that you go through this process every beginning of the season?

Great review as always. I used an original SS turbo Grand Prix up until 2012/2013 (when I joinedthe forum) bought it in 1991.the profile is nothing like the original but what ‘retro’ bats are?
The original turbos were convex with no discernible spine.
That profile looks awesome though. Would love to try one and makes me feel sad that I sold my original turbo. However, it went to someone in Australia so must have gone to a good home.

Yep normally have a full change of kit but net with all my bats and then come 1st game which ever is in pole position in my mind is the seasons match bat unless it breaks (only ever broke 1 in 20 years of playing). All others get a run out when I net or lent to other players I trust and normally at least 1 or 2 will be sold to a teammate at a loss lol.

Why is that Chris?

Well to be honest, it’s kind of my weakness. I don’t drink or smoke so I buy kit. I’m a bit OCD and like my stuff to be new and clean etc and each season something seems to come along that I like more than the previous season. I also like to have a range of choice hence having 3 full sets of kit from 3 different brands including bags and thigh guards etc.

I’m also probably coming into the last 2/3 seasons of playing competitive league cricket so making the most of justifying to myself that it’s ok lol.

There are a couple of exceptions such as my GM kit is the same as last year softs, bag, keeping kit wise just added Noir and Mythos bats to the Neons. Other than that the GN of course this Surridge kit just won me over. Finally I like something a little different and don’t think I’ll see many Surridge FKW’s up here in Suffolk lol.
