Brian Lara’s Bat

I was watching BC Lara’s batting today (his first test century against SA) and he used to wield his bat like a toothpick with a ferocious speed and beauty. I wonder if anyone has seen his willow in flesh? What was his bat weight and profile? I know that James (Laver & Wood) has made a few for him during his M&H days. Also TK has made a few for him as well.

I heard a rumour years ago he was using 2lb4/5 at some time but that was a long time ago

Yeh, I think his test match 400 was 2lb6 with 2 grips

The bats James had made for Lara in the past were around 2lb7oz, in a simple big edge classic profile (big edges for the era obv)

Brian Lara started his county  career using a 2.11 bat he was a better than average player while at warkwickshire with his back lift  it was suggested to him to use a 2lb 7 bat using it he  went on to break most individual batting records.

I am pretty sure he smashed the Aussies for 150 277 in Sydney, which is an all time great innings before he had even heard of Warwickshire Not to mention the 375... which he scored before he popped over for some county cricket.

It was 277, and he signed for Warwickshire two weeks after the 375.

Nonetheless, he made a hundred against Glamorgan in his first knock since his record, and with a bat he only picked up the day before. "The one I used in Antigua has been signed by all the players and is now a memento," he told the press. He followed that with 106 and 120 not out against Leicester, 136 against Somerset, and 26 and 140 against Middlesex. The only hiccup was his one-day form where he had managed only 64 runs in four outings.

The way he batted with an exceptionally high backlift could only be done with a light bat(I've stood next to him at a Lashings match he is quite small and not muscular).

Second best in my book to Richards, Lara was an absolute joy to watch. his hundred at Bridgetown to beat Australia by one wicket one of the best innings ever

You tube is a godsend for anyone who has not seen it. I don't think even the most one eyed Warks fan could claim they transformed from better than average  :)

He was going to be a great from his late teens

I think lighter than 2lb 7oz sounds plausible. If indeed he used a 2.11 that’s just unbelievable as most of his strokes seem to come from his bat speed rather than its weight (exactly opposite to Tendulkar).
