The 'yearned' for bats!
« on: June 12, 2019, 07:21:35 PM »

Can you remember the bats that you 'yearned' for as a kid? If so, what was it and why? Did you ever get one? Or are you still on the look out maybe?

I can only think of two I've ever really wanted, basically they were both used by English left handers and I assume that because I am also left handed I felt some kind of affinity with them, and in my childish mind all that separated me from them was that they had a better bat than me...as opposed to the gigantic gulf in talent and ability!

The first was a GM Maxi Original LE. I wanted one because Trescothick had one, and I liked Trescothick a lot because for a while he got loads of flack for not moving his feet enough which I was also correctly criticised for at the time. I remember the feeling of jealousy I got when a guy from school brought in a Purist 808 (I think). Back when GM used to give their grades a star rating I believe the 808 was the lowest grade to be given 5 stars and I remember thinking that looked like the business.

The other was Andrew Strauss's Power Bow that he was using in the 2005 Ashes. Again someone else at school had one (albeit with the carbon handle) and I was very jealous.

Never owned either of them and I wonder if either of those bats were actually the ones used by Tresco or Straussy or just stickered up custom jobs. I definitely remember getting teased a bit at school because I had a Warsop (which were bloody good actually) and they weren't endorsed by any big players so they must be 'rubbish'! Kids minds are so simple!

Go on, tell us yours!

The GM Purist. My brother got one and I ended up with a maxi. Never quite forgave my parents for that.

Later years, i wanted a woodworm torch, or a kook beast, never had either unfortunately.

Recently it was a Chris Lynn velocity. Which is in my cricket bag upstairs!

The 1st bat I ever yearned for was a GN Excalibur after seeing Atherton use one and then seeing 1 or 2 when I first started playing men’s cricket when I was about 12. Would love a modern replica by GN

Always wanted a V100 when I was a kid so I could be like Mark Waugh. Years ago I picked up a V100 that the seller assured me was one of Juniors very own bats.

I've been on the lookout for the V800 that they released at the same time as the V900 (the one that had the raised spine), still looking though.

Loads...cos I grew up poor *violin*

I had a full-size CA grade 1 bat which was really heavy bought for me by an uncle from Pakistan. I could have done with a harrow.

CA quite didn't have that reputation then but just within Pakistan so I didn't appreciate what I had.

I always wanted a UK branded bat... Slazenger or  Duncan Fearnley...

In recent times bats I've always wanted but never owned... Newbery (but not bothered now as they aren't TK made) and Salix.

A Jumbo - I have never fancied a shape more.

In fact the holy trinity to own would be a Jumbo, a Scoop and a V12
