Sounds like a lack of confidence, which can really only be cured through practice.
I'm the opposite - find myself always on the front foot, even for cut shots.
I attribute it to the way I practice. With no-one to bowl to me, I had a ball on a string hanging from the shed roof. It's a great way to practice front foot movement, getting your foot just inside the line of the ball, and hitting with a straight bat through the line of the ball.
Every time you hit the ball, go back to you initial batting stance, then step forward for the next one - repeat.
All the usual stuff applies. Head level and steady, knees slightly bent, front elbow out, weight evenly balanced, take a good step forward, staying low and keeping the back foot grounded.
After doing this a while, your front foot shots might come more subconsciously.
