Sledging?

I’d be interested to know where people stand on sledging in amateur cricket.

I ask as I’ve found I’m generally in the minority amongst my group of friends. Personally I’m not a fan. I don’t so much have a problem with a few ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ or the odd ‘he’s had a fish at that one!’, but I do dislike constant natter from keepers at batsmen. I’m talking about the ‘you’re a walking wicket mate’ or ‘go on I bet you couldn’t hit him over his head next one’ etc etc. And I absolutely cannot abide by it when it gets genuinely unpleasant. I know a lot of people think it’s part of the game, and maybe I don’t play at a competitive enough standard to care anymore but I aleayd thought cricket was above that sort of  tiresome nonsense, I also find it can discourage amateurs who aren’t used to a hostile reception.

What do you lot think?

The odd comment to encourage bowlers and motivate the fielders is fine in my view. Constant chirping and anything personally offensive is out of order. Tends to be keepers that can't keep their mouths shut!

I talk to the oppo a lot when I'm batting (and the rare occasion when I'm called upon to keep) but it's never sledging, it's good natured laughing and joking with (but not at) the opposition. I'd never say anything on the cricket field that I wouldn't say to someone if they were standing in front of me in the clubhouse after the game.

Sledging is just cowardly, more often than not done by people taking advantage of the chance to pretend they're a tough guy knowing that they are safe from the repercussions that would occur if they said the same thing to someone in the street or in a bar.

As a keeper myself I had to say I am quite chirpy but never ever in a personal manner against someone’s ability or in any aspect in a derogatory manner. Lots of encouragements to players and bowlers but I do talk to batsmen and try to a degree get them to do something they wouldn’t want to do. The best batters don’t engage at all. That’s league cricket if I ever play Sundays or T20’s then I don’t say much at all.

I will happily however tell someone when they cheated and don’t walk or are very abusive when they are fielding and he has all his mates around.

It shouldn't be considered "a part of the game", it is idiotic for the reasons you stated and more.

These chirpy keepers do a lot of damage to their own team though as they could wake up an otherwise bored and tired batsman. A few sixes and chirping stops. :D

Next time someone doesn't take a hint just tell him to "shut your man pleaser!". If he continues, insult him right back.

I wonder if people have stories of fights breaking out. :D :D

In our last game, our new and chirpy keeper was told (very politely) by a big, 6'4'' batsman that he was talking too much. Our keeper shut up after that polite warning. :D:D

must admit i hate it - and it is creeping into scoial/friendly cricket too - would also say for the majority of the time i have witnessed it, it is counter-productive - it seems to motivate the person being given stick - best one i ever witnessed was our spinner telling a guy he only had one shot - who then proceeded to a beautiful 100 by noting every 'extra' shot he had to our spinner  - never laughed so much on a cricket field in my life!!!!

Nearly had an all in brawl last year in a game I was involved with, without going into it too much, the home teams adjoining football club showed up in the middle of a game, all drunk, about 30/40 people on the fence hurling disgusting abuse for half an hour before something disgusting and personal was said to a fielder on the fence.

Fortunately the home club evicted the drunk footballers after a small scuffle between the fielder and the person who had made the remark and a little bit of pushing and shoving from other fielders and crowd members. To the home clubs credit they were extremely embarrassed and apologetic.

 Easily the worst thing I've seen on a cricket field, which oddly enough nobody on either side was really responsible for. The game outside of that was played in fantastic spirits.
