Because he keeps taking lots of wickets?

I still largely consider him as a batting all-rounder and he has averaged 16 in the last year. It's hardly worthy numbers.

As before, can’t help thinking Ali is in as opposed to leach because our batting is so fragile

So they want the potential of runs lower down...

Don't know how Moeen is in at all to be honest. Same probably applies to Bairstow

I'm gonna guess it's because he's the best spinner

No argument from me that’s he’s in terrible form with that bat, but his bowling form means he’s worth selecting on that alone. With the added bonus that he might suddenly fire with the bat again. Your number 8 averaging 16 isn’t exactly the end of the world.

He is not the best spinner available and is in the side because he can bat; except he can't do that either

Is that the same Moeen that has 45 wickets at 23 in his last 9 tests? If we have a spinner better they’ve yet to show it.

Like Woakes, the batting is just a bonus that helps paper over the cracks in our top order. It’s hardly Moeens fault we can’t find anyone to bat 1-3.

Yup. Still take Leach as a front liner

As I said earlier, I like Leach, but he’ll have to be content with the number two spot until he proves he’s better than Mo.

Didn’t get much of a go here but going at 10 an over vs Ireland is not helping to convince me.

Got to love this forum

No sign of finding anyone that’s decent for the top 3 batting spots. But let’s instead argue about dropping the spinner with world class stats from his last 9 stats!! (23 average is ridicolous in tests, remember below 30 is classed as top drawer!!).
And a keeper batsman with 20 50s and 6 test tons and instead chuck in two relatively Unknown’s int he test arena.
That’ll sort all our issues.

Only so often you can peddle a 20 50s and 6 tons narrative; he's averaged 25 in the past year with 3 50s and 1 ton (which in SL was impressive) and 5 ducks in 18 innings, largely at #5 which is where he wanted to be, finding this new way of just getting bowled through the gate time and time again. His glovework has also been average and the the selectors catered to his needs by dropping Foakes and having him keep again

And yeah, top 3 looks patchy; I still don't think Roy should be there and I'm disappointed that Burns hasn't been able to show what he's capable of at test level, and I say that as a Surrey supporter

Must be a while since an England opener top scored in a match and was then dropped?

Wasn't Boycott once dropped after scoring a double hundred?

I think this will be a defining series for Moeen - I suspect the Aussies will look to attack him - His stats against them in tests are pretty average but he had a very good series with the ball against India. If he holds his nerve he'll have a good series but as a confidence player is he gets hammered about in the first two games he'll struggle with the final three.

I suspect Denly will do averagely. Will he be any better than Malan, Jennings, Compton, Ballance etc etc - I suspect not. I'd rather have seen some form of continuity to be honest.

Don't understand the argument for Foakes at this stage. I'm a fan of his generally but his performance for the lions was poor and he clearly isn't in the form of his life with the bat. I understand you can't rely on Bairstow's stats forever but to unseat an established player you should at least be in good nic.

Obviously the issue isnt Moeens inclusion then, it's the capacity that he has been included in. Nobody would be up in arms if he was playing as a bowler and batting at 9 the issue is the batting looks very thin with him at 7, especially given the issues with England's top 3. Stevie Wonder could see that his batting isn't what is was, and if Curran doesn't play it means England's tail is too long.

Surely he won’t bat higher than 8?

Roy
Burns
Denly
Root
Bairstow
Stokes
Buttler
Ali
Woakes/Archer
Broad
Anderson

I wouldn’t say that was a long tail, even with Mo in terrible form.

Stokes
Bairstow
buttler

Will be 5, 6 and 7 in some Kind of order.

So moeen will be as high as 8 at best. So to me he is in as a bowler. When he turns up with the bat it will be a bonus.
He really really ain’t there as a batsman.
