Moeen will not bat higher than 8 - If Denly doesn't play Curran will be 7, I'd say that's a strong tail.

As I have said previously Mo was always going to be picked over Leach. His stats are excellent over the last 9 tests, it was a choice of who is the spinner in the team, batting doesn't come into it. Also Australia will have a number of left handers in their top 6 and Mo bowls very well against LH.

The only real decision to make is Woakes vs Archer. And that will depend on pitch, conditions and Archers fitness.

Personally from an Australian perspective I'd play

Bancroft (rh)
Warner (lh)
Khawaja (lh)
Smith (rh)
Head/Wade (lh)
Labuschagne (rh)
Paine (rh)
Pattinson (lh)
Cummins (rh)
Starc (lh)
Lyon (rh)

That I feel is a good balance to disrupt lines and not give Moeen a chance to really settle in to left handers.

Interesting article on Mo, maybe more a confidence player than some others in the team. The middle and lower order has got us out of a hole regularly in recent past that continues to be the reason we have so many all rounders(you would presume), and a specialist spinner cannot be picked, same as we can't pick a specialist keeper....except the specialist keeper is also a very good batsman...but that's another thread  :)

I guess the selectors are thinking we will be 70-4 most games and at number 8 we need someone who can ...potentially....score more runs than anyone else...

Sounds like Root is going to bat 3. I would probably say I like him there again, but this still feels like he's being put there when he as the captain couldn't be more clearer about where he wants to be...

Totally right call, bayliff wants him to bat there and has done for ages. Very much doubt Root has ‘been told’ to bat there thou

There is so little experience (tests) in Roy/denly/Burns he needs to bat 3 and take some pressure off the team.

As the article says thou, could well be they have an eye out for another opener and Roy at 4...

Hahaha we're struggling to find one opener let alone another one, think we need a permanent night watchman at 1/2 just to solve the issue

I read some where that theyre interested in Crawley and Sibley, i wouldnt bet against sibley making his debut in the ashes at some point and crawley could go to south Africa/new zealand this winter.

we could have two new openers by the end of 2019/20 away season

Denly at 4 is a joke of decision. If they see Roy as best suited to 4, then bat him 4. Dom Sibley should’ve been given a chance with the amount of runs he’s scored.

Pattinson and Khawaja have just been confirmed to play.
Love the feeling just before and ashes series!

Yes read that too. Roy long term may be better at 4 but that’s more changes to the openers.

But if you look at what we have including Denly it’s not exactly solid.

Myself I think Denly is a short term option

It does beg the question why did we not at least try someone new against Ireland??

That’s what I don’t get

Same!!!

i think Ed Smith has got most things right since he took over as head selector but this test summer he hasnt.

Olly Stone was a good decision but i think one made because jimmy was never playing.

roy to open was always going to happen but picking him over sibley i dont agree with and i hope we dont have another burns where hes picked 2/3 years too late and at the end of a purple patch!
