looking back i think there is plenty to take away from edgbaston.. obviously the back half the game was dire but:

we did have them 122-8 being more clinical thats 150ao with jofra or olly stone to come in that extra pace should help there.

first innings we batted well, proper test match batting, the collapse on day 3 was mainly batters who are woefully out of form and those who were in were starting again and everyone (except smith it seems) is vulnerable then, if we can bat like that in every game and take each game deep we have a great chance of coming back.

looking at the aussie batting line up im still not convinced they will be that consistent, again smith aside,

Warner and bancroft are just coming back, i think how we attack both earlier is outstanding
Khawaja is either great or crap nothing
smith is smith
head -  a bit unknown looks a good player but put pressure on and see how he copes
wade - yes he tonned up but they were on top at the time, see how he gets on under pressure, like the first innings
paine - again scored a few but that was when aus were oon top, nothign first dig under pressure, has never proven himself with the bat, keeping was mainly tidy but not at all perfect
pattinson - will play all 5 and will take wickets
siddle - does what he does, probably not play all 5
cummins - best quick in the world
lyon - class

the have starc and hazlewood to come too but if the batting wobbles who is there? mitch marsh... as an england fan i wouldnt mind him coming in as a batsman!!!!

that being said if australia get ahead in games i dont think were mentally strong enough to come back late in games like they did

Just to add our batting is in the same position and needs shoring up!!

We're one test into a 5 match series so trying to stay positive!!! that may all change after lords though!!

England lose far too many matches at home.

They dropped curran who probably has had more match winning performances (yes - with the bat) than any one else

CONFIRMED - Jimmy out of second test.

Woakes must keep his place now as the "swinger" also his record at the home of cricket is outstanding!!!!

It might be but our record at Lords is not great, it’s pretty flat apart from that Ireland game which went all over the shop

Think that means Archer is in. Remaining positive for a min Smith if we can get him out early we are back on even with the Aussies
Leach in I hope would make us a better side.

Not sure about Denly, top pro looks a bit short at test level but deserves a bit more of a run

Sam Curran might feature in our middle order before long, def has potential as a bat and forth seamer

Our batting is the biggest concern. We've continually worried about the top 3 yet the middle order has also failed to deliver repeatedly. The form of Bairstow and Ali has fallen of the edge of a cliff and Buttler rarely produces consistent scores. Something is wrong for what is clearly a talented bunch of batsman to all be so unable to dig in when things get tough. This has been happening far too frequently, including recently against the West Indies and Ireland. Something needs to change, whether its attitude or players selected. I also think Root is not a suitable captain and we need someone to come with strong leadership, much like Morgan has done in the ODI team. Someone to lead from the front and gets the team he wants - players with guts and who perform or their gone.

Doesn't Lords have a new head groundsman? i think we could have a similar wicket to Ireland

Hmm not sure mike hunt, careful how you say that, has been for years maybe he’s retired

It could be a lottery if it’s like the Ireland game but...maybe that would help us?

I must say that so far I have been perplexed by the state of the two test match pitches we have had this summer and the players we have selected to bowl on them.  Against Ireland we prepare a green seamer which was Ireland's best chance of getting a result then select two spinners and one of the quickest bowlers in county cricket.  Against Australia we prepare a dust bowl that turns from day one despite Australia having the best spinner of either side then put out an attack of fast-medium bowlers for a green seamer.

Hopefully the deck at Lord's will be similar to the one we played Ireland on

I'm still in the mindset that the series will be close and we'll comeback from this. It's odd tho how we used to pick the ODI side based on test cricket and now pick the test side based on ODI cricket!

I don't think Roy is the answer and Sibley should have been tried sooner, so can see him coming in soon and Roy dropping to 4, or keeping him there to drop Denly and bringing Foakes in with the gloves and moving Bairstow up. In fairness anyone of the top 7 apart from Burns, Root and Stokes could be dropped on current form. Butler, Denly, Roy and Bairstow all have huge question marks over them at present.

Burns
Sibley
Root
Bairstow/Roy/Denly
Stokes
Butler/Roy/Denly/Bairstow
Foakes
Woakes
Archer
Broad
Leach

Harris showed good signs in his tests against india and Labuschagne is leading the run scoring in county cricket, they are handy enough players and will play before Marsh, I think the commentators are the only ones who think he will play, personally with this current lineup, I don't see the need to play the extra bowler and I don't understand the obsession with playing all-rounder unless you have someone like Stokes, which nobody does.

I'm not sold by the Aussie batting line up either, but equally, the English line up has proved to be as questionable and the depth issue is the same If not worse.

Looking forward to Lords! Starc in and siddle out for mine, but I wouldn't be surprised if they kept the same team.
